I know exams are cancelled this year but up in Scotland they are doing these PACs, it’s actually really hard for them as since they have been back it’s been non stop assessment really. Now they are doing prelim/mock style exams and the results of these plus teacher professional judgement will determine their grades. We have

Almost 17yo DD1, last year she did ok failed maths resitting this year, gaffs about doing nothing then stresses. Has 3 exams this week including a maths one, done nothing all day yesterday spent it curling her hair, sleeping and watching Netflix, this is her usual day. Been going on for weeks/months. Told her all through lockdown, says she has a problem with writing enough in the time, got her past papers told her to study them which she hasn’t. When she does do something it’s beautiful highlighted notes of no content. She came in last week crying saying she’s failed maths again. It’s our fault she didn’t have a tutor (it was lockdown)! Refuses to listen to us saying you won’t get this time back etc you’ll have all the time in the work to faff about in June etc.

DD2 is 15 genuinely very bright could get all As if she just did a little bit of work. She does nothing too.

Both of them aren’t allowed phones etc in their rooms overnight (of which we are the worst parents ever) on school nights. I’ve tried to talk to them about how I hated my blather teacher and deliberately didn’t go to class then failed maths then has to resit it etc. It’s really getting me down as I know come August will have tears. I know I should just let it be a life lesson to them but argh teenagers!

No advice, but we're in a very similar situation. You have my sympathy!

And although DD16 is ultimately responsible for her revision etc, the way that it's all been handled has been absolutely awful. Extremely unclear/nonexistent planning and information, pretty much setting them up to fail.

pumpkinpie01 · 18/05/2021 07:28

Is there much chance of them cramming the week before ?

Oh I know they are both at different high schools and it just highlights how the schools have been left to do their own thing too. I do feel for them this whole year has been a shambles.

They could be doing past papers to help with timings etc I even said one past paper in each subject a day. DD1 says she finds it difficult to get it all down in the time so I said work on that, “no” was the reply! She even said I hate writing in capital letters but you get marked down if you don’t. I said well just do for your exams “no”

You have my sympathy op. Similar situation here, 4 exams last week and 3 this week.
The way this has been handled has been awful and my DC is def stressed by the whole situation.
Their teachers are doing all they can to support them but I can see this being another year where the Scottish government will have to deal with a lot of unhappy children, they were told there would be no exams but these tests are worse, at least with official exams they are spread out and they get study leave, some of these exams have been given with less than a weeks notice
