What age for holidays without parents

I’m talking about UK holidays not travel abroad. My DH says he stopped going on holidays with his parents at 16 and went to youth hostels with friends instead. Now my DD would like to spend a couple of nights at a Premier Inn by the coast with a couple of friends (youth hostels not being open yet). What would you do?

Sorry meant to add whilst both D.C. were experienced travellers, and had both been away on school trips abroad I wouldn’t have agreed to a friends trip abroad before 18

I went abroad at 17.
My daughter planned to attend festivals in the UK this year but covid scuppered that. She's nearly 17. Id allow her to go but I wouldn't be paying for it. That's key for me, if they want a holiday without mum and dad they need to pay themselves. If she comes with us then we pay.

I stopped when I was 17 but I hope mine still want to come away with us until at least end of uni so 21/22. I am sure they will as long as we pay.
They do holidays and travelling with their mates and have since 16/17 too.
Camping and interailing and city breaks when it was allowed, best of both worlds.

Not abroad until over 18 on own I should add, just UK camping before that on their own.

LovingBob · 02/05/2021 09:14

She might be better going camping as that is more likely to be allowed under 18

flapperdapper · 02/05/2021 17:42

Thanks everyone. Just to make it clear DD is 16.

After year 12 (you can still be 16!).

My 17 year old DS is hopefully going to Cornwall this summer with friends - he's first year A Levels

tearsforfears72 · 06/05/2021 13:12

I think I would allow from 16+
In my personal experience DD1 went on her first holiday with friends a couple of days after her 18th birthday.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/05/2021 13:15

DS went on holiday with 2 friends to France when he was 16. He also went to the Reading Festival.

Depends on her maturity, but 16 year olds are old enough to live alone by law (not that I think that's a good idea).

@sumpplneedshaking

I was 16 on my first holiday without my parents went to Magaluf.

It would depend on the child and her friends. Do you trust her? How far away?

So was I and no chance on earth my kids will be doing the same 😂😂
Divineswirls · 06/05/2021 13:24

I could easily trust my DC 14, 15 to have a holiday alone with certain friends.

You probably need to check where will take under 18s OP before she starts planning stuff.

No, dd needs to check before she starts planning anything. If she's old enough and sensible enough to go, she should be capable of making all the arrangements.

SE13Mummy · 06/05/2021 13:41

DD1 is 16 and going away with friends after finishing Y11. She'd have gone at 15 if not for covid.

Yes exactly. Although I did send an email once it was booked asking if they took under 18's - feeling paranoid that DS didn't explain it well enough HmmGrin
