My 14 year old , well almost 15, has a lot of spots . We’ve tried clearsil wash, to little effect.
Anyone have any tips on teenager by skincare?

My 13 year old got quite bad acne about a year ago and we tried all the over the counter stuff but nothing worked.

Went to gp and got antibiotics and he's more or less spot free now, they work a treat. Took about three months for them to completely go though.

We got Duac from the doctors, he still has some red patches but definitely not the huge erupting acne spots he had before using it.

Doesn't GP treatment for bad skin have awful side effects?

WeAllHaveWings · 20/04/2021 23:39

For the last 6 months we have been using the effclar-posay range which was recommended by a poster on here.

In the first few days of using it his skin looked matt, not shiny/greasy, but it doesn't over dry his skin so ok for twice daily use. Now he only ever has 1-2 angry spots and the sebaceous filaments and blackheads on his nose have reduced too.

In the morning he washes his face and shoulders with the cleaning gel in the shower then puts on the duo+ Salicylic acid cream on his face. At night before bed he washes with the micro-peeling cleanser, uses the toner and then the duo+ cream.

If he gets lazy and doesn't use daily the spots quickly reappear so he tries needs to keep it up. We also change his pillow every 3-4 days and give him plenty of fresh masks for school.

Look at Caroline Huron's blog. She has loads of good skincare advice for teens

My 14 year old son uses Cerave hydrating gel cleanser and Acnecide which you can get from Superdrug or Boots. Nip/Fab also do an excellent range of products from spot prone skin.

My 12 year old ds is already suffering and there is no doubt that mask wearing makes it worse Sad
•Basic scrupulous hygiene is the most important step. Clean towel/ flannel every day, clean pillowcase every other day.

•Face wash twice a day (ds uses Cerave foaming one for oily skin).

•Spot cream twice a day (anything with salycic acid should be good).

•Clay face mask once a week.

•Gentle face scrub (ds uses body shop Tea Tree) once a week.

It actually takes quite a bit of commitment from them.

Benzoyl peroxide cream is the only thing I found that works for teenage spots (and middle aged spots!)

stepford1 · 21/04/2021 11:31

My son finally clicked that having lots of fabulous products to solve his skin issues ONLY work when he regularly washes his face! Great advice on here all and will be adopting a more frequent chance for teens pillow cases which I'll be starting at home (but not upgrading them to the silk pillowcases i now use for my skin AND hair in my late 40s!)

Try a website in essentials UK
My teenagers use the lavender it is very good.

HoxtonBonnet · 21/04/2021 14:38

Go to the GP - dd and ds have both had acne and nothing over the counter worked. They were both prescribed Duac cream, which contains benzoyl peroxide and it was extremely effective for both of them.

TenCornMaidens · 22/04/2021 11:57

My DS had quite bad acne and OTC things did very little. Trip to the GP and antibiotics plus Duac and it is so much better. He is completely uninterested so needed a Dr opinion. Me offering lovely and expensive technical skincare solutions was of no interest at all.

Silver serum off amazon has helped my sons skin

BigTallyWacker · 23/04/2021 23:16

Just see your gp and ask for Duac. Don’t waste time and money on anything else.

ssd · 24/04/2021 15:59

Is duac a cream or a tablet?
And is there a regime to follow until you see results?

Hellocatshome · 24/04/2021 16:02

Duac is a cream, DS applies it in an evening so it has time to soak in before he goes to bed. Other than that he just washes his face twice a day and I wash his pillowcases regularly.

ssd · 24/04/2021 16:07

Is the cream only put on the spots or on the whole face like moisturiser? Sorry if that sounds dim.

Hellocatshome · 24/04/2021 16:36

I'm pretty sure he only puts it in the areas that have spots but to be fair that is mostly his whole face so I'm not 100% sure
