Any brilliant ideas about how a teenager can raise money for a world challenge trip ? I hate sponsored events because we don't have many relatives and i hate bludgening people .
Obviously a job is necessary but just wondered if anyone had any new and profitable ideas.thanks

Not sure about new, but a friend of my ds did an awful lot of car washing.

nailpolish · 08/11/2007 17:49

babysitting?
dogwalking?

how old is your ds/dd?

grittypud · 08/11/2007 19:31

She's 15. Already does little baby sitting and earns her mobile phone bill by ironing neighbours shirts !

hi there I did a world challenge trip about 2 years ago and it was great, where is she going?

Are they doing anything as a group? coming up to xmas is a good time for bag packing in larger supermarkets and often rises a lot of money with little effort.

ALso do you do know of any hall etc where you could organise a cheese and wine night, quiz, auction of promises, something like that? My sister did a karaoke(we went together, she was 15 and I had a job to pay for mine). We have a karaoke machine and she charged people to sing and people could bid to get people to stop! also she auctioned off the top 5 sings, someone paid 20 quid to sing angels!

also odd jobs around the house?

when it comes to getting equipment check out discount stores, online swapping etc. Only new thing I would reccomend is good fitting rucksack and boots.

PenelopePitstops · 08/11/2007 19:39

sponsored events are also good, could she get all her friends to sponsor her a £1 that would add up, also if it was somehting like a litter pick on your road she could ask neighbours etc for donations.

also ebay unwanted toys clothes etc

Thanks PPS , like the idea of a cheese and wine night in village Hall. will get her onto bag packing NOW . she is going to Ecuador summer 09 . Elder d went to borneo in 06 had amazing time but it was the schools first WC and they were not too good at the fund raising except for own jobs. dd2 does not have as much time for jobs what with Gymnastics, netball team ,hopefully homework etc etc . trying to do it all !!!. (it has occurred to me that she could probably raise most of it by not texting or using mobile but unrealistic !!!)Trying to encourage them to start now because it seems a long time away to them but it isn't.

DS2 is going on World Challenge too, next summer. He thinks that fund raising is virtually impossible (small family, everyone we know have children who are fund raising, it isn't for a charity) apart from specific tasks such as bag packing or car washing. As the sum needed will end up being around £3k he is devoting virtually all his earnings from his Saturday job and we are footing most of the rest of the cost.

Tortington · 09/11/2007 13:09

i dont know what it is - is it linked to school?

Lilymaid · 09/11/2007 13:15

World Challenge - it is a very expensive activity which is similar to Duke of Edinburgh but involves a long journey to somewhere exotic rather than slogging over the Welsh hills!

turnbacktime · 09/11/2007 13:16

Another vote for bag packing here - around xmas or easter (expect xmas will be booked up) knwo when there a group of them, a small fortune can be raised (but they need to talk to the poeple, and ASK if they want bags packed - yes please, I'd like the potatoes to squash the eggs - people will sometimes pay them not to pack! Other goodys include a barn dance/ ceilidh (similar type thing I can spell!) cahrage say £5 for entry, hire a band and hall, put on a raffle (get prizes doated by businesses and friends) and rn a bar - makes a fair bit - then little jobs, know a group of local girls volunteered waitressing at peoples wedding receptions for a donation (got the donationa nd didnt drop the plates!) Wil keep thinking - hth

World Challenge is an organisation that sets up trips for young people to spend time in other countries for various lenghts of time. The group is expected to plan & organise their trip and there is an element of helping in the country . My dd1 spent a month in Borneo, treking through the jungle , falling partly through a bridge on her 18th birthday, had her first legal drink round the campfire, climbed , swam , hugged an orangutan and taught children in the jungle , helped get stones out of a river to build a church and LOTS more (300 photos ) There is a web site . I am sure it helped with her ucas application as she is now a 2nd year med student and gave an otherwise not very sporty child a lot of confidence.BUt it is expensive partly due to the flights and safety support given but they are exoected to raise thr money as part of the challenge. But school work can suffer if too much time if spent on working to earn money . thanks for your interest This is enabled by her school and one teacher plus one WC person will go with them for guidance not as a 'leader' .

it saounds a long time but will come fatser than you think!

how many months is it until she goes? i broke my fundraising into monthly totals.

im guessing she has about 18 months until she goes, therefore for £3000 she needs about £170 a month. This may sound a lot but if she has lots of small things going on and one big thing every few months it will soon add up.

Also try writing to local businesses for sponsorship, donation of raffle prizes?

does your town have a xmas fair she could run a stall at such as raffle, bric a brac, or any othe rlow cost high return games.

Definately get on as much bag paccking as possible. ring round all the local big stores.

Will the school let the group do a disco or no uniform day to raise funds? we had a namibia flag colours day and everyone paid £1 which raised £1000 doing not much.

PenelopePitstops · 09/11/2007 13:28

Just seen how old your dd is, does that mean she is doing her gcses next summer?

if so that summer break is a great time to get a job and work earning lots of money.

Another bit of advice is get her an account with the money in that she cant access. I k now it sounds silly but it will mean if she ever gets the urge to want the money for something else she cant just go out and do it ona whim. My mum did this for my sister and it worked really well.

grittypud · 09/11/2007 13:30

about 18 m , bag packing sounds good and love the 'flag colour day ' . I don't mind paying some of it but she will have to make a good try and maybe give up 'shopping days' !

Can she play an instrument?
There's a fortune to be made busking in the right place!

Also bake cakes and biscuits and sell them at church or in school.

Or make crafty things and sell at a craft fair.

Do ironing whilst she babysits and charge double!

deste · 09/11/2007 21:38

We do a lot of fundraising and bag packing is easy money. We can make about £850 in 4 - 6 hours. You have to write to all the large supermarkets and tell them the reason, you might get one if you are lucky. If you do you need to get people to cover every till. Try a car boot sale. Best of luck

grittypud · 21/11/2007 14:25

thanks for all the suggestions
