Shoes!

Ds goes back to school next week, and his feet have grown AGAIN. They are now bigger than his dad's feet. Sort of cutting slits in the toes of his shoes, what are we to do until shops open again?

Is OL shopping the only option? I really don't want to do that. Ds is a nightmare shoe-shopping - long, thin feet and very fussy about how the shoe looks, what's permitted at school, and how it feels on. At least he's not bothered about brands.

Is OL shopping the only option?

Or supermarkets

AlwaysLatte · 05/03/2021 09:50

I'm in a panic about this too! I thought show shops would count as essential and they're closed!!
I'm going to get a couple of pairs from M and S delivered next day and hope for the best otherwise it'll be dreaded Asda of something.

Dilbertian · 05/03/2021 09:50

Good idea!

None of the supermarkets near me sell shoes, which was why that never occurred to me. But I can go further afield. Would they allow him to try them on, though? Or do I buy one in every style and two sizes?! Confused

If he's got long thin feet then supermarket shoes are unlikely to be suitable (as I found out when ds's school shoes disapeared during the dress rehearsal of the school play the day before he was due to represent the school at an event where smart, full uniform was required.

Will the school be lenient at all? Ds's old school are being mindful of the fact that shops are not open at them moment.

Sandseasurfsun · 05/03/2021 09:52

Just buy (online) the next size up in whatever shoe he was happy with last time. You know he likes it and chances are the shape is still right for his feet style. That’s what we’ve done to get round this for DDs skinny feet in trainers until trying on instore is possible again.

AlwaysLatte · 05/03/2021 09:53

I'm ordering two pairs each and just hope that one will fit each of them. Starting to wish I'd kept DS1s old shoes as emergencies!

Prestel · 05/03/2021 09:54

Where did he get his current school shoes? If they do online orders, getting the same style in the next size up might be your best bet.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/03/2021 09:54

I'm in the same boat.

I intend to take both kids to go get measured/fitted properly when the shops open but there's no where local that sells decent shoes ( don't like clarks) and sports direct only give you store credit on refunds so that's no good either. I dont particularly want to fork out for cheap supermarket shoes. Both kids are heavy on their shoes and dd1 has a longish walk to and from school so flimsy cheap unsupportive shoes are not an option really.

The youngest is currently in trainers ( she's in school at moment) but the oldest....I dont even know what size she is any more so I can't afford to buy multiple pairs online to just send back..

Lemoncurd · 05/03/2021 10:07

Another child here with long thin feet, has to try on about 10 pairs each time to find one that will do.

I thought the best option was to just get the same style again in the next size. Before I ordered I decided to look up online sizing charts and found the Startrite printout chart to check the fit. Good job we did as his feet went off the scale going from size 6.5 in September to 8.5 now (yes I did make sure I printed it to the correct scale)! We ordered from John Lewis as there was no delivery charge and the shoe actually was cheaper than from Clarks direct.

The style was Clarks Scape Sky, he has now had this 3 times in a row as it was the only one we could find that worked for his slim feet.

Here is the printout gauge www.startriteshoes.com/paper-measuring-gauge

I found Zalando very convenient for online shoes shopping, since they offer free returns (by company’s policy), so I use to buy in different sizes/styles and return what does not fit well.
Very good prices sometimes on certain models.

Flashinggreen · 05/03/2021 13:19

I got some from next click and collect

Dilbertian · 05/03/2021 14:55

His current shoes were from Sports Direct.

But! He has found a pair of his dad's Sketchers that he likes and are only just too small, so I'll get some of them in a couple of sizes. School are generally fairly reasonable, so I think they'll accept him in whatever he turns up in, at least for the rest of this term.

Ds needed new blazer, new shirts and new trousers last September. He looked like an overgrown Y7 - the blazer had to be ridiculously wide in order to accommodate his ridiculously long arms, and the trousers needed major belt-tightening to keep them on his skinny hips. Honestly - the boy is all arms and legs, and feet!

When ds showed me that his shoes were too small, I asked him about his trainers. He told me that his toes were pressing against the ends of them as well.

I asked dh if he has any shoes ds could try on. He found a couple of pairs, but they were too small.

So yesterday I did a 23 mile round trip to buy ds shoes. None of them fitted, so today I repeated the trip to exchange the shoes. Still no good.

I am now resisting the urge to do something drastic, like slay the two of them:

Dh found a pair of brand new shoes at the back of his wardrobe which he has never worn because they were just a bit too big for him. They fit ds perfectly. And ds's trainers also fit perfectly, now that I've adjusted the orthotics which he had shoved in without trimming - his toes had been pressed against the upcurled end of the orthotic, not the shoe.

I feel your pain!! Ds 12 needs a 9, I ended up drawing round his foot on card and taking it for a trip round the local supermarkets. Found some men's black smart shoes in Tesco that's he's not impressed with but they might need to do as school not very flexible on uniform.
