I have a son who is 15 and I want to find some new books for him. The difficulty is that he has a lot of anxiety and can't cope with the 'apocalyptic' type of plots, which so many YA books use. Does anyone have any suggestions for books with non-apocalyptic plot lines which aren't too babyish or obviously marketed at girls (I have no problem with this but it puts him off)?

Adrian Mole? My ds loved it...it's a little dated now but an easy, fun read.

I know what you mean though...my ds prefers books about normal day to day life rather than apocalyptic fantasy style books and its hard to find anything he'd like.

Terry Prachett’s Discworld (I wouldn’t start at the colour of magic though I’d pick a
storyline and stick to it, guards or death personally) David Eddings’ Belgariad, Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London.
They’re all fantasy, not sure if that’s his taste, and funny (not so much eddings) and low on cheese.

I love Adrian Mole and have it somewhere, good idea.

He's not been into fantasy stuff so far, but maybe would be if something grabbed him. Thanks for the suggestions

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
Looking for Alaska
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Outsiders
Eleanor and Park
Ready Player One
The Eyre Affair
Noah Can't Even
Girl. Boy. Sea.
Rivers of London
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Theodore Boone
After the Fire (great book but check if he would be ok with the content)
Orangeboy
The Universe Versus Alex Woods
When Mr Dog Bites

A few suggestions that aren't fantasy or dystopia, agree it's tricky!

Oh and I definitely second Adrian Mole and Discworld books!
Bit old-fashioned but maybe some Jeeves and Wooster?
For something a bit more edgy but realistic rather than dystopian maybe Melvin Burgess? Kill All Enemies is a good read.
And Keren David's When I Was Joe.
Anthony McGowan's The Truth of Things. Fairly short as they're aimed at being dyslexia-friendly but beautiful writing about teenage boys.

I'm grateful for the suggestions, thank you
