just wondering because my mum isn't too bothered but does try to limit them whereas some of my friends parents try to ban them completely (not that it works)!

@zeitgeista

i promise i'm not asking in a nasty way but how do you actually stop the 17 year old from drinking them? just curious bc my parents used to be really against me drinking them when i was younger but eventually gave up because they knew i would drink them if i wanted them anyway
Without trying to sound smug or goady, I believe because he knows why I don't want him to have them. I'm not dictating to him, he has the knowledge of how bad they are of how much I loathe them and he makes a decision.
Cuddling57 · 04/01/2021 21:22

Never allowed my DS to drink them. No fizzy drinks either. I guess he hasn't had a chance to develop a taste for them and at 16 now he is more interested in looking after his body. Although does eat some chocolate.
Things obviously could change though.
I've weaned myself off of sweetener drinks as I think they cause cellulite!

zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 21:26

luckily haven't got cellulite!!
i could definitely do with a better diet tho because i really don't eat healthy at all and i know that lol

No. Mainly water. Heavily diluted fruit juice or squash drinks occasionally.

Someone I know had a heart attack at 35. She not only drunk energy drinks but smoked too.

formerbabe · 04/01/2021 21:43

Diluting fruit juice means you're consuming less sugar and its better for your teeth.

Lockdownlovernotfromliverpool · 04/01/2021 21:45

I took ds 25 to hospital a year ago. Suspected heart attack.. Dr knew it was energy drinks. Told him to quit immediately.. He was lucky. Wasn't a heart attack but a warning he was told..

zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 22:27

tbh i'm surprised theres so many people saying these things about them bc i've never really heard of people having any affects from them other than rapid heartbeat

surely diluted fruit juice doesn't taste that good tho

It's fine, you get used to it. I'd much rather drink diluted juice than a can of fizzy drink.

Tastes better than fags
zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 23:16

other than rapid heartbeat

Has nobody ever taught you even why this is bad?

I've discussed various health knowledge matters with dd since she was little. Admittedly I'm an ex nurse but I noticed at least half of her friends parents without particular hcp backgrounds took a similar stance.

Not on complicated stuff at first of course but started with things like why it's healthy to eat a wide variety of foods and not just your favourites all the time, why we need to stay hydrated and then as she got older and depending what was happening socially (eg the increasing popularity of energy drinks) we'd discuss the health issues there too.

Surely at school you were taught the basics of how the body works?

My foster son does loads of sport but is never allowed those drinks they are very bad for you. Just water or if home milk or weak squash. His coach has told him water is best so he is fine with it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 05/01/2021 05:48

You do realise that getting the shakes IS the caffeine having an effect on your body right. You will be getting a high from the caffeine then crashing. Getting the shakes probably means you have too much caffeine in your system.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 05/01/2021 05:53

@zeitgeista

jealous that someone has enough money to spend on them.

what's your problem.

Cut back on the fags and you'll have more money for energy drinks. Simple maths really.

Ah your young, give it a few years. Wiith a bad diet, energy drinks and plenty of fags, you'll have some in no time.

@zeitgeista
‘why do you dilute fruit juice????’

What formerbabe said.
Less sugar, better for the teeth. I also drink diluted fruit juice. It tastes fine. You get used to it. DP says he isn’t keen but I automatically dilute it anyway and he drinks it without complaint. 2 young DC have no choice. Adult DC can do what they want but still dilutes their fruit juice. We explained why when the DC were young and they understand. We tell the younger DC that baby teeth are weaker than adult teeth. Also, us adults only drink fizzy drinks with a straw to protect our teeth.

Tip: I started using sparkling water to dilute sqaush several years ago, so no need to have Fanta, etc in the house.

Plus, my younger Sis had to have teeth removed when she was young due to the effects of fruit juice.

Bouledeneige · 05/01/2021 09:29

My DC were never interested but of course if they'd wanted to they could easily have bought them themselves. I've never banned anything - I don't think it would work. My two are fairly sensible except when they're not!

Ohalrightthen · 05/01/2021 09:35

@JorisBonson

I miss being a teenager and thinking you had everything sussed.
Saaaaame. The calm confidence in the fact that i knew exactly what i was doing, and that i knew better than everyone else.
zeitgeista · 05/01/2021 11:30

don't appreciate the sarcasm lol but thanks.

thanks for explaining about the fruit juice.

OP posts:
OHolyTights · 05/01/2021 11:46

I never buy them, have explained why and advised against. I also reduced the amount of fruit juice and smoothies I make and buy and the size of portions served with a similar discussion. Fizzy drinks are available as a Friday/Saturday night treat with a meal or treats with a film and I buy cans not large bottles for portion control. The rest is out of my hands now when not at home - or pre lockdown at least. I know they have been offered and bought by other DCs, even their parents.

I hear at school - naice/mixed rural area - of some DCs having an energy drink a day, sometimes for breakfast, sometimes several a day. It's not always the DC you'd expect, either.

At a recent hospital appointment one DC was asked by the consultant ' do you drink energy drinks? If so, please don't.'

OHolyTights · 05/01/2021 12:02

It's always been mainly water and milk, some diluted fruit juice, less diluted cordial. Hot chocolate or, less, fizzy drinks as an occasional treat - I avoid ones containing sweetener or certain other additives. Now it's also decaf tea and coffee - no sugar although one DC likes half to one sugar. Let's not mention the chocolate, cake and biscuits though Active, with healthy weights glossing over the truly awful Terrible Teenager issues.

I think energy drinks are the work of the devil for health - same as smoking.
