Oh yes - they are brill - but the Sally Lockheart ones are less taxing than His Dark Materials, if he's a bit reluctant.I think there's another thread around somewhere. hang on, will see if I can find it for you.

GarrottedbyElasticband · 24/10/2007 21:24

Hi GarrottedbyE, we love Philip Pullman in our house, what a shame you couldn't persuade him. But we like Eoin Colfer too, the Artemis Fowl series went down well (boy detective stalking the world). Also Lemony Snicket (maybe young for him but it's funny and great villains in it). Eragon the dragon fantasy book was far better than the film, now reading the second one, Eldest. Also starting out on Terry Pratchett which is hilarious, 'Eric' was a good one to begin with. DS also likes the 'Groosham Grange' series. Philip Pullmand did a couple of comic style books, Count Carlstein, which might appeal to your ds. Good luck, I'll be watching this thread to see what others come up with.

Ds loves Philip Pullman, grown out of HP but he's a huge Anthony Horowitz fan aswell.

screaminghousewife · 24/10/2007 21:26

Pratchett's Mort was a big hit with ds at the age of 13.

pratchett rocks

janeiteofthelivingdead · 24/10/2007 21:35

It's not a massive thread no. If you go to "Topic List" it's in Children's Books - it's called "Books for a 12 year old boy; can anybody help?" It's not specifically about Pullman but it has many recommendations.

Terry Pratchett would be good, as Custy says: There's a series about little people (is it "The Carpet People"?) which is fun.

GarrottedbyElasticband · 24/10/2007 21:43

thanks
will do

My ds (13) can't stand Philip Pullman/Eion Culfer type stuff as doesn't like fantasy, but absolutely loves loves loves the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore.

They're very gritty, exciting, stories about a school for teenage spies.

Written in a very real life, warts and all but funny style.

The first one is called the recruit. There are about 7 or 8 in the series, set between 2003 and 2007.

GarrottedbyElasticband · 25/10/2007 21:42

he might like that

Robert Muchamore's 'Cherub' series. They are absolutely fantastic

lovey · 26/10/2007 20:09

and he will definately like them if he is an Alex Rider fan, I promise!

3littlesparklers · 02/11/2007 16:34

Anything by Jonathan Stroud, also the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.

My nearly thirteen year old has never been a great reader, but has become entranced by a series about a prehistoric boy, Author escapes me (no time to google), but titles are 'Wolf brother' 'Spirit Walker', and, er, something else and something else. So great to see him reading!

12yeargap - that's Michelle Paver.
