turning wifi off at night

Who here with teens turns there wifi off at night?? I was speaking to a couple of friends last night who switch theirs off at 10pm so their teens can't watch netflix or go on their phones. From a selfish point of view I couldn't do that as I watch iplayer or catch up and netflix and I would have to miss out. I have never restricted phone use, tv or screen time when they were little perhaps because we are an active family and in normal times we were always out doing something so screen time when we are home isn't an issue. My DD is 14 and is great at self regulating without me stepping in every 5 mins. They were a bit shocked that we still have internet access after 10pm!!

I don't turn wifi off but I do have restrictions on phones so they lock after a certain time.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/12/2020 10:34

We don't switch off but encourage expect ds to self regulate.

Topseyt · 05/12/2020 10:38

I've never done any of the switching WiFi off at night bollocks either. DH and I would still have been using it anyway, so would have been cutting off our noses to spite our faces.

It seems to be an obsession some people have.

That's clever. How do you do that @OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea?

We use the screen time app for the phones and then each device connected to our WiFi is controlled via the WiFi app

Sparklingbrook · 05/12/2020 10:46

Never done that-as @Topseyt said DH and I want to use the WiFi too. We allowed all the gadgets in rooms and our two self regulated thankfully. If they hadn't I guess we would have had to take the gadgets away overnight.

Floofy I just use Google family link. Yen could turn off themselves as Google allow them to remove parental controls after 13 but teen also knows doing so will result in losing their phone.

Mine is not good at regulating though, they will sit and watch YouTube for hours on end and not even break to eat. Their younger sibling is the polar opposite and I could probably take all restrictions off their phone and it wouldn't mashes any difference to the time they spend on it.

I think it does depend on the teenager. My two were the sort to say they were going to bed because they were tired. Very unexpected.

I do remember some sort of shenanigans over too much gaming and not enough doing chores etc though because I took the router to work with me the one day. It was very funny when they realised.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/12/2020 10:54

I can control the WiFi to particular devices and there are night time restrictions on the PS4

Herdwick · 05/12/2020 10:56

Just log into your router and set restrictions per device. It's very easy to do.

It's not good for the router to frequently switch it off, it can mess with the stability of your connection and shorten the life of your router as they are designed to be left on and powered off in a particular way.

yomellamoHelly · 05/12/2020 10:57

We don't, but their devices re turned off at 8 and stay downstairs with us.

LindaEllen · 05/12/2020 11:38

We do that, and he just goes and turns it back on when we're in bed. We don't hear him do it. I'm not sure what more we can do really.

Log into the router, set a timer on his devices e.g to be off between 10pm and 6am, then change your router admin password and hide it somewhere only you know where to find it.
