Anyone know anything about braces and orthodontist treatment?

I live abroad and I am worried about the orthodontist treatment my teen is receiving.

Is it usual (as I thought) that the sequence of treatment is that first you have "excess" teeth removed, then you have braces put on? Or do orthodontists sometimes try and move the teeth first before extracting them?

My daughter has an overcrowded mouth (have been told this by two different dentists). She has one tooth on her lower jaw that is almost growing outside the "line" of the others and is sticking out a bit. I'm not a dentist but I assumed this would be removed. But my daughter came home yesterday with wire wrapped around it and it's been tied in to the rest of her braces in her lower jaw. It looks quite strange tbh. Especially as we were previously told she would need four or five extractions as part of treatment.

The orthodontist comes highly recommended and actually teaches orthodontistry at a teaching hospital as well as practising.

Am I right to be worried does anyone know? I haven't been able to attend treatments with my DD (who is seventeen) since the start of the pandemic in March or else I would be asking the orthodontist myself.

Not an expert but DD 15 has just had braces fitted in UK (NHS) and they have left all teeth in, done top brace and are seeing if improve before removing any.

My DD had braces put on / very overcrowded, no extractions. They try and maintain healthy teeth these days. They are all lovely and straight now. Plenty of room.

I had a tooth like this . My teeth were moved to make room and the rogue tooth brought into line. I now have a permanent retainer behind these teeth to keep them in place

DS had two teeth extracted first. Several of his friends had similar. I don't think it's unusual. Our orthodontist did a great job and ds teeth are lovely now.

Teeth seem to move really quickly so they will probably soon see if it isn't working. At 17 though perhaps she can ask next time.

Its completely dependent on many factors. How much space there is/how much they want, what they are doing with the rest of the teeth etc. This is clearly a highly qualified and respected orthodontist for them to teach, you need to trust their treatment plan.

Your DD is 17, Im sure she is capable of handling her own orthodontic treatment.

One ds had teeth removed before braces put on and one ds has not needed to. Both started treatment at 13.

Thank you all. That's reassuring that quite a few of you have said they try and maintain healthy teeth these days. I am comparing my dd's treatment to my own which took place 40 years ago so things are bound to have changed I guess!

And YY, at 17 yrs, she is well able to handle her own treatment! I think the unclear communication is between me and her tbh, rather than between her and the orthodontist!

Thanks again everybody.

Orthodontists are very highly trained so even though it might not seem like the obvious option for treatment, I would be inclined to completely trust their professional opinion.

Imperfectcurves · 05/12/2020 09:09

Thank you Candle18 I am reassured now , I promise! The tooth concerned just looks so odd with the metal on the tip of it, unlike the rest of them!

My DD had 4 teeth removed pre-braces and my DA didn’t. Different issues, and different orthodontists (both NHS), but recommended.
It really depends on the issue regarding the teeth.
