Any experiences of CBT through CAMHS?

My 15 year old daughter has horrendous problems with social anxiety. She also has really, nasty tics. She’s had tics for a long, long time, but over the last few months her anxiety has escalated, her tics are now so bad we’ve had 2 visits to A&E in a week as she’s knocking 7 bells out of herself, and stuff like leaving the house has become an issue.

She was referred to CAMHS about 4 months ago but didn’t meet their threshold so was referred for 6 sessions of counselling through a local charity.

She’s now been re-referred by school and the GP, backed up by the Consultant Paediatrician to CAMHS for CBT and CBiT, and this time she’s been accepted. There’s a 12 week wait for the initial assessment, so we’re looking at March before she’s even assessed.

Following the 2nd A&E visit, after she knocked herself out punching herself in the head, CAMHS are going to try and bump her up the list a bit, although no promises.

I’ve been doing a bit of research and I’ve been recommended a private psychologist. They can do the CBT but not the CBiT and can start with her just after Christmas, however, it’s £70 per session, which is not unaffordable but it won’t be easy to find at the moment.

I guess I’m just interested to hear experiences of CAMHS - will it just be 6 sessions again - it took 4 sessions before DD could even speak to the counsellor last time? However, they do the CBiT, and the private psychologist doesn’t

I just don’t know what the best thing to do is

Thanks!

That sounds like a very distressing situation for both of you.

How do you think she would feel about doing an online version of CBT specifically for teens whilst waiting for her CBIT?

We have been doing private CBT sessions with mental health nurse for 12weeks for severe anxiety/rash behaviour/meltdowns.
To be honest I can't see much improvement. She sees sessions as a core and does then only as paid for and I make her!
My psychologist friend said talking is always good especially to an outsider but for CBT to work the patient needs to want to help themselves. She says in teens not particularly successful fir that reason.
Think I'm the one needing the counselling just as much. This last year has been so hard.
Good luck with getting treatment plan

Thanks!

She is very keen on getting some help. I have made it very clear that she needs to put the work in too and she says she’s up for it so I’m happy to give it a go. Having managed to knock herself out, she feels she’s hit her rock bottom.

It took a while for her to warm up to the previous counsellor so 6 sessions isn’t going to be long enough, and I don’t want her to have to build another relationship with a different counsellor.

I’ve looked for some online CBT stuff while we’re waiting, but I’m not sure whether starting and not finishing, or chopping and changing is a good idea.

It’s difficult to know what’s the right choice.

I think I need a counsellor sometimes too.

It’s hard, I’m trying to be positive and sunny but it’s hard work.

It's not a Counsellor and I think that asking for help yourself might not be a bad idea, but this book might help.

I haven't read it but have read untangled by the same author which was very accessible and very useful Thanks

Hi - my daughter had CBT with CAMHS, although it was groups sessions first by default. Didn't particularly help, but clearly it does for some. I totally second the comment about someone needing to want to help themself.
There are so many counsellors around, whether or not it's strictly CBT... worth shopping around a bit. Eg Relate we used for a while, they do adolescent counselling not just relationships. Was only about £25 a session.

Oh I meant to say - following also as DD has had tics for about 6 months. Including knocking herself unconscious. No advice to add though. Let me know if you find a cure! It's awful xx

My son has had private CBT for anxiety although it’s not as severe as your daughters but it’s not really helped. However he is not particularly motivated which may explain why. The counsellor is great, he just doesn’t do the work trying to get down to the root of the problem. Consequently it’s not really improving.

Thanks all!

I’ve booked her in with the private therapist on Friday for an initial assessment so we’ll go from there

I’ve chased CAMHS - still quoting 12 weeks. DD is very keen to get started so I don’t want her to lose any motivation
