Teenage greasy hair

My DD (12) has started to get really greasy hair. I know when I was her age you could buy shampoo according to hair type - i.e. dry, greasy or normal - but when I looked that doesn't seem to be a thing any more.

Can anyone recommend anything that's good for fine, straight, greasy hair? She only washes it every two or three days, and I'm going to suggest she only conditions the ends (though it does get really tangly). Any thoughts gratefully received - thanks!

Following, as my 16 year old DD has horrendously greasy hair. She washes it at night and by morning it’s greasy.

We’ve tried changing shampoos, she’s tried washing it less, but nothing has worked so far.

sickandtired23 · 19/11/2020 15:45

sometimes it helps to plait the hair before going to sleep, if it's long enough. I don't know why, it seems to somehow prevent the oils from the scalp spreading onto the hair, which is what makes it greasy.

LittleTreasure · 19/11/2020 15:53

I recommend Herbal Essences Dazzling Shine shampoo. I don't use conditioner at all. My hair has been fine and needed washing every day all my life! This is a good basic, no frills, affordable shampoo. My hair can go for a day and a half-- but this is an amazing thing for me! I've tried so many other shampoos over the years but have always come back to this and its predecessors .

oldmotherriley · 19/11/2020 15:54

Solution ? Stop washing your hair (or drastically reduce the number of times you do) ! The more you wash it the more the glands in your scalp will work to replace the oil, you have washed away......vicious circle !

SomelikeitHoth · 21/11/2020 22:46

I have always had hair like this and it DOES need to be washed every day. Leaving days without washing makes it a lot worse.
I use herbal essences, the strawberry and mint one.

SteeperThanHell · 21/11/2020 22:48

My son uses Head and Shoulders for greasy hair - it’s the only one I’ve found that actually works.

BeautifulSofa · 21/11/2020 22:49

It's drying every day that's most damaging - she could try washing every day and tying it up?

PlanDeRaccordement · 21/11/2020 22:49

My youngest has this problem and switched to baby shampoo. Regular shampoo was too harsh and was causing her oil glands to be over active.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 21/11/2020 22:50

Tell her to put the shampoo onto DRY hair. Then massage through and rinse as normal.

It works so much better at breaking down grease........works on getting oily head lice lotion out in one go too.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 21/11/2020 22:58

Try a clarifying shampoo or a bar soap.

grassisjeweled · 21/11/2020 23:00

Don't condition it.

Wash it twice when in the shower.

Use SLS free shampoo. Alberto Balsam Tea Tree tingle is cheap, and good.

SmartyPants0 · 21/11/2020 23:04

Ensure that she is washing her hair with warm water and getting a good lather before rinsing out all of the shampoo, and get her to use a clear shampoo with out silicone, i also second putting conditioner on the ends.

RoseDog · 21/11/2020 23:04

Vosene or Alberto balsam tea tree and only condition from the nape of the neck, does she comb the conditioner through in the shower? That helps de tangle it.

thenobsiworkwith · 21/11/2020 23:11

My advice from always having greasy hair which is still bad, but not as bad. Going days not washing it does nothing of your greasy hair is down to hormones like mine. I used baby shampoo as a teenager and massaged into dry hair around the roots then added water to really lather it up. Don't use conditioner unless you had to but then literally only on the ends. As an adult now I use normal shampoo, but massage into dry than lather with water. I use a hair wrap to get moisture out and then blow out the roots so they are dry. If I'm drying all my hair I use a heat spray but avoid spraying on roots. I use dry shampoo between washes and can now wash my hair every other day, even though I hate it on the second day and do want to wash it

liani · 21/11/2020 23:12

Have you tried dry shampoo? It's great for when my hair is greasy but I don't want to wash it.

thenobsiworkwith · 21/11/2020 23:13

Does she suffer with her skin? My skin was oily and spotty and the dianette pill helped a lot to make it more manageable

Heartofglass12345 · 21/11/2020 23:16

I get greasy hair and wash it every other day. I use conditioner as even though I get greasy hair it still needs conditioning. You could condition then shampoo. I find drying mine with the hairdryer helps too rather than letting it dry on it's own.
You could try dry shampoo too, I use the original batiste one, rub it into my roots, blow dry and brush it at the same time (mainly because I have dark hair and you can see it on there) Either that, or put the dry shampoo in before she goes to bed

chocolatespiders · 21/11/2020 23:16

I wash my hair everyday and suffer with grease.
My favs are head and shoulders citrus. Loreal clay shampoo. And Lush I love juicy shampoo.

MazDazzle · 21/11/2020 23:26

We’ve tried almost every shampoo on the market for greasy hair, including some the ones mentioned above. The only one that has worked is T-gel Oily Scalp.

grassisjeweled · 22/11/2020 00:30

Forgot about I Love Juicy from Lush, that stuff is really good.

Andi2020 · 22/11/2020 00:33

Change pillow case as grease goes on pillowcase helps a bit.

chuffedasbuttons · 22/11/2020 07:54

Another vote for the T Gel for oily. It's much cheaper than that at boots in 3 for 2

My DD uses Alberto Apple as she doesn't like the tea tree tingle. And Treseme moisturising conditioner in white bottle. I pick both of these up for £1 each, the conditioner is often in Aldi

Neither have build up.

She gets dry patches of scalp - so we use the T Gel once a week and wash every 2-3 days

If it's greasy, it will be greasy - it's hormones. She's a bit young for the pill so help her get through the next few years and if hormones bother her such as periods or skin, GP !

amymel2016 · 22/11/2020 08:00

After she’s washed and dried it put a little dry shampoo in, it then collects the grease as it builds up. She should get an extra day out of it this way. I would also move to washing every other day. I have really greasy hair but manage it in this way.

supersplodge · 22/11/2020 13:38

Thanks all - lots of options now. I will try some of these and see what suits her best.
