Setting up driving lessons

Hi all.
I am trying to change our insurance policy to cover my soon to be 17 year old.
Our insurer will only change it when he is actually 17.
But- that gives no time for shopping around if it's too terrifying!!
I had wanted to be ready ( and take him out in the day)
Any advice?
TIA

I found it cheaper to use Veygo so the insurance was DDs and separate to mine.

grafittiartist · 12/11/2020 15:35

Oh- is that possible? Just to have their own policy?
Thanks!

Yeah then it doesn't affect your NCD, though they only do I think up to three months at a time. Still worked out cheaper for the time period we wanted though. DD now has her own car and we insured through Collingwood who do specialist insurance for provisional licence holders.

Thank you very much- that's really helpful.
I don't think that I will be able to get a quote until the day though?

You can probably put in any old details if it won't give you one to give you an idea. It cost about £100 for 3 months for us in a small-ish car. My insurers wanted something like £500-£600 extra for the year, but I was hoping it wouldn't take her that long, though obviously it's all been disrupted.

When is his birthday? If it's after lockdown, can't you book him a driving lesson with a proper instructor for his birthday? My dad gets a lot of birthday lessons!

grafittiartist · 12/11/2020 17:03

His birthday is this month.
I have probably missed the opportunity for a lesson now. Or maybe not.
Thank you all- it's all quite confusing- I appreciate the help!

Ds is 17 early next year. I put him in a quote with birthday today as a provisional driver to see how much it would cost. It is a Ford focus estate and the premium increased from £255 to £2449 😱

Need to think of a plan B!!!!!! Will try some on the suggestions above. We'd thought of hiring a learner car with dual control might be better at £12/hr.

Warning, all the good instructors round here have long wait lists because none of their students can book tests Sad

My ds booked a test in August for this week. It's been rescheduled now for March 2021 Sad

TabbyStar · 12/11/2020 21:53

There's some app they can buy for £18 that alerts you about cancellations if you've got a test booked that you want to bring forwards, DD's friends have used it, but who knows when tests will start again.

grafittiartist · 13/11/2020 18:31

Thank you all for your help.
I did a pretend quote, for a separate insurance just for DS. SO much cheaper than I was expecting! Just did three months- but not too scary!
Cheers!

I used Marmalade Insurance so it was totally separate to mine until they passed then added them to my insurance.
