When does normal teenage angst become depression?

My 14 year old daughter has told me over the last few months she had occasional times when she feels hopeless, worried no one likes her (she has a firm group of friends) and cries a lot. She said today she had fleetingly thought it wasn’t worth being alive. Obviously I’m worried. But everything I read about teen depression talks about losing interest in things, withdrawing from friends etc. She has a good group of friends and they chat, meet up, skateboard and hangout online a lot.

Is she feeling “normal” hormonal sadness or is it more? Planning on speaking to our GP tomorrow but I wondered if anyone had any helpful words? Thanks

I think she’s normal. Just tell her thanks for letting you know and keep the dialogue open. I remember it was so hard being a teen and I cried all the time, and if we were honest I reckon a lot of us have felt suicidal thoughts at times. But kids are more open now. Just keep an eye out x

I really feel for you - teenagers and their emotions are so hard to deal with. If only we could take their pain and upset from them.

As she's 14 and it's been going on a few months, could it be period / PMS related? Could something as simple as taking evening primrose be an initial solution? I've suffered monthly anxiety/ feelings of depression for a long time and personally think EP made a huge difference to me.

Good luck 🍀

I think you’re right to speak to the GP, we did with DD. Always best to err on the side of caution and let the experts decide, just like you would with any physical health problem.
