DD’s heavy periods

I don’t think they are heavy heavy (as in she needs a medical check) but they are certainly heavier than mine ever were.
I hardly even knew I had my period it was so light.

I’m going to get her the next level up of tampax today but please can anyone recommend a comfortable but suitable sanitary towel to go with it for these first few really heavy days? The choice I’m the supermarket is too large; I don’t know what’s good and what’s not good.

DD (15) is getting really upset about it all and wanting to do nothing while it’s so heavy in case she gets caught out.
She’s only had about 6/7 periods; this might settle down huh?

TIA

I actually spent my whole life like this, they never settled down. I wish I had spoken to the dr instead of thinking I just have to put up with it until my late 30’s!
They can prescribe tranexamic acid to reduce the flow if it’s really heavy or other medications/contraception. Didn’t personally work for me but these things help lots of women.

I had to use these. The extra length meant I didn’t have to worry about leakage from the front or back of the pad when sitting. It’s awful being too afraid to leave the house and being worried about standing up in case you’ve leaked onto the chair you are sat on Blush my hysterectomy has been life changing!

Also I recommend lilets rather than tampax. Tampax expand lengthways where as lilets expand widthways.
They do applicator ones if she needs an applicator.

this may be helpful

Yes lilets are better than tampax. And come with a bigger range if absorbancies if you go for the non applicator.

There's also cups that hold up to 3 tampons worth so might be worth looking at. Check out precious stars on you tube for advice on that

Bodyform ultra long heavy flow in the pink packet I hear are pretty good. Boots might have them in a 3 for 2 so try there first.

Have you thought about doubling up with some.period pants ? Recommend modibodi. And i just got some wuka which look good

I could have written this! PLEASE just because you had light periods don't dismiss this - it is MORTIFYING when you leak all over your bosses chair - I know it used to happen to me until I had my hysterectomy. I am of the age where we were expected to get on with it and it really affected me at school.

wuka pants are brilliant ! If you go to a dr they will probably prescribe the pill. I advise reading as much as possible about it because in my experience drs just fob you off with medication. ibuprofen can lighten periods. ,check nhs website

Period pants? There are loads of brands out there now. Or mooncup? I had really heavy irregular periods, passing out regularly etc and the GP just put me on the pill at 13!! Then at 26 I finally had a Gynae who listened to me and sorted me out (operation for endometriosis and then Mirena - which worked brilliantly for me but I know doesn't for others). Wish I'd had someone who listened to me earlier and I wouldn't have had years of embaressing passing out episodes in random places and leaking!

Thank you so much everybody. DD and I really appreciate all the replies and we’ll look into all the options.
Her school friends are telling her that she shouldn’t panic as the consensus seems to be it takes at least a year for things to settle and a routine to emerge via a vis length or period, heaviness etc.
I promise I won’t let her suffer unnecessarily SmileSmile

Yes, I would also recommend lilets/supermarket non applicator tampons. I spent my teenage years worrying about leaking by using tampax and it was only when I started buying my own sanitary protection that I realised how much better they were.

They are wider and shorter and just absorb more before leaking. Any sanitary towel will be fine but bodyform are not scented. My periods have always been quite heavy on days 2 and 3 but lilets + sanitary towel is pretty bombproof for "normal but heavy" periods.
