Car Insurance once they've passed test

DD is 17 and booked to take test in Christmas holidays.

We are planning to buy a 1.2l Fiat Uno with me (experienced driver) as the registered keeper and both of us as named drivers.

We are happy to have black box, mileage restriction, curfew etc etc.

We live in SW London.

Any suggestions for which company/policy to use?

You will need a 'main' driver on the policy. If that is going to be your daughter make sure you tick the box that says she is not the registered keeper.
We searched on the comparison sites and ended up with LV.

Dd just uses the usual comparison sites. The first years premium with a black box was over 1k (we are in a village in SE). It reduced by about 25% after the first year and after the second year was less than 50%.

She puts herself as the main driver and adds me as an additional as it brings the premium down a small amount. I do actually drive it but mainly just to pick her up from nights out to save using my own petrol Smile

I'm in the same boat with dd taking her test next week. Insurance quotes I'm finding are anywhere from £950-£1500.

Do try different cars as well, you might find some have cheaper insurance than an Uno. Even ones supposedly in the same insurance group can be different prices.

My dd has just passed her test. Her insurance is with Insure the box and was just over £900 (Peugeot 107) with her as the main driver but me as an additional. She went through one of the comparison sites and this seemed the best option. The ones without a black box were hugely more expensive.

Okbutnotgreat · 14/10/2020 08:17

My Dd decided that paying the extra to not have a black box was worth it so hers was £1400.

My 17 year old has just passed. We bought a brand new Fiesta for us to share (have 3 kids, he’s the eldest, no way are they getting one each) and I still have my big mum bus to use.

I’m the owner and main driver (true, he gets the bus to school) and when he passed it was £540 to insure him on the remaining 9 months, this is with Admiral multi car.

rottiemum88 · 14/10/2020 09:26

If your DD is the main driver, make sure you declare that with the insurer otherwise the policy will be invalid

KingscoteStaff · 14/10/2020 10:10

@rottiemum88 Is main by hours or mileage?
I will drive to work and back each day (not far, but in slow London traffic), but DD might do one long drive a month so would clock up fewer hours but more miles, if you see what I mean.

I’d say you were the main driver.

whereshalligo · 18/10/2020 08:55

A couple of years ago now but when Ds passed did a 10 month accumulator policy with admiral no black box which price wise was ok. After 10 months one years no claims discount. Now all on one multi car policy where both dh and I are allowed to drive all 3 cars we own but Ds only his. Each gaining ncd

NiceTwin · 18/10/2020 08:57

We went with Admiral multi driver.
Means myself and dh have to move our insurance over to them when it comes to renewal.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 18/10/2020 08:59

If you are using the car daily and DD once a month you will be classed as the main driver.
This will make it cheaper.

Londonnight · 18/10/2020 09:11

My son passed his test a couple of years ago. His car cost around £1000 and it cost £1600 to insure. He is the main driver. I would recommend going with this as your daughter will start getting her own no claims discount.
You will need to check your insurance as to whether they will insure your son if you are the main driver. I can't get insurance on my car for my son to go onto mine due to his age.
