Septum piercing for 16 year old?

Hi All. I'm after a balanced opinion as my Conservative self is screaming No!!! In the background!
My daughter and I have been discussing incentives for working hard in her GCSE's next summer. Today she has asked that if she gets "X" good grades would I allow her to have a septum piercing.

We've discussed the piercing before and up to now I've said No not until your 18. However I'm now having doubts. Looking online they don't seem perhaps as dreadful as I first imagined.. Aren't as drastic as some other piercing types and there are good licenced places here we could go to.

So just after a concensus really. Would you allow your 16 year old daughter to have one??

At 16 you can’t stop her, most piercing shops only need parental consent for U16.

Septum piercing can be flipped up into the nose when in a situation where piercing aren’t appropriate, unlike other facial piercings that need to be either taken out (Risking healing up) or covered with a plaster so I think they are quite good in that respect. Don’t have kids tho so I’m not coming at this from a parental perspective to be fair.

CatRamsey · 26/09/2020 16:08

I think it sounds like a good compromise, and at least you know she'll be getting it done safely.

They can be tucked in if they need to be hidden. I don’t see piercings as permanent (not like tattoos) because they can be taken out if they don’t suit in the future, so at 16 I would let her make this decision for herself.

Kanaloa · 26/09/2020 16:26

Obviously I know that the piercing itself leaves a mark, but I mean in the future if you didn’t want anyone to know you had the piercing you could just take it out without affecting you at all.

Ohalrightthen · 26/09/2020 16:27

...at 16 she doesn't need your permission.

Hi All. Thanks for your opinions and seems like should be OK... Which I was coming round to anyway. Most of the places I've looked at locally ask for parental permission below 18...but I guess that's just individual salons policy rather than law. Also as it will be an incentive for GCSE work she will have lots of time to mull it over to be sure its right for her.

My 16yo has one very recently! Healed great, and flips up out of sight as others have said.

Make sure she goes to a UKAPP piercer! Because a septum pierced wrong is a disaster, it'll be wonky, painful, won't heal properly.

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 27/09/2020 00:44

Yes, if that’s what she wants. After the initial healing you can change it to a small, dainty one and it’s easily flipped up in a setting where it’s not appropriate. I have one which I flip up more than down and no one would know I had it most of the time. Bear in mind it can’t be flipped up during the healing process for best result, so might be better to get it done at the end of exams as a reward for hard work, then it can heal over summer and be flipped up for college or sixth form as needed.

My 15 year old dd has hers done (and her nostril and various bits of her ears 😬) the septum isn't my favourite but she loves it and flips it up in school. I figured it was her nose and agreed!

WeAllHaveWings · 27/09/2020 11:03

I wouldn't like her to get one either, they are vile looking. But if that is what she covets and she will be 16 I would go for it as it is reversible/ can be hidden. It's there enough time after grades come out before returning to school for it to heal /does it need removed for pe (if she still has it)? Make the grades she needs to get achievable but still very challenging (and hope she changes her mind!)

Looneytune253 · 27/09/2020 11:05

Well my dd has been told she can have hers done when she's 16 and we would take her. Turns out she's had it done anyway and I didn't even notice for weeks and weeks as you can have it so that it's completely invisible.
