DD15 is watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

DD 15 (year 11) has started watching MLP again. She watched it when she was 5-9, and started watching it again a year or so ago, then stopped watching or mentioning about it up until recently.

I don’t have a problem with her watching the show (why would I?), and I know that lots of older people love the show, but it’s not entirely ‘normal’ for a bright girl her age to start to watch that kind of show (though I’m not entirely sure what teens these days actually watch ahaha). She watches a lot of cartoons and anime (though the anime are a lot more mature than the cartoons), but her taste in TV is pretty diverse.

Do you think I should ask her about it? She seems to just enjoy the show, but I’m wondering if, maybe, she’s watching it to try not to grow up, and she might need to talk.

(Sorry; this probably makes me sound stupid and overly anxious LOL)

MLP is great! I like the episode with the film noir pastiche. And I do sometimes ask myself what Twilight Sparkle would do if I need a bit of motivation or direction.

GreekYogurtWalnuts · 15/09/2020 23:38

Little bear is the best comforting show. Bear

Noti23 · 15/09/2020 23:39

I often catch myself still watching Peppa Pig long after toddler ds has toddled away. I don’t even like peppa but I go into a mild trance when it’s on. I’m sure whatever she’s watching is harmless but easy and distracting.

cravingthelook · 15/09/2020 23:40

No issue, it's a familiar easy comfort thing. My DD rewatched her favours shows (Hannah Montana, Suite life etc) when she was late teens.

INeedNewShoes · 15/09/2020 23:41

I still comfort read children’s books now (reread Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter etc. every few years).

And I will happily watch kids’ TV from time to time. Some of the CBBC period dramas like Hetty Feather are quite watchable.

When I was 18 and just off to uni I would sometimes watch the Hoobs if I was awake at 6am and didn’t want to get up and risk waking housemates up.

I’d happily sit through an old episode of Sesame Street any day!

Pandacub7 · 15/09/2020 23:44

@GreekYogurtWalnuts yes agree!!

flameprincess · 15/09/2020 23:47

I'm a 33 year old woman and will still watch repeats of Animals of Farthing Wood.

You are overthinking this.

EggyPegg · 15/09/2020 23:49

@allfurcoatnoknickers

I used to enjoy some Saturday morning kids TV when I was that age. I vividly remember getting very invested in an episode of the Gummi Bears Grin and being annoyed I had to miss the second half.

I also enjoyed typical teenage pastimes like underage drinking in the park, getting stoned, chasing boys and lying about my whereabouts. I seem to have turned out fine

I came on to say Gummi Bears! I loved cartoons from my childhood at that age. Favourites were Gummi Bears, Rainbow Brite, The Raccoons and Dogtanian (I had a wee crush on Dogtanian). When I was about 21, I managed to find the complete set of Gummi Bears and Rainbow Brite on DVD. I'm 38 now and I still own them.

Relax. It's escapism.

EggyPegg · 15/09/2020 23:52

And I also used to go drinking in the park and chasing boys. I'm a reasonably well adjusted (my rant at the three males in my house being bone idle earlier notwithstanding) adult these days.

Dying laughing at the definitely a Nazi comments. I wouldn’t worry, as a teenager I would still happily watch Arthur and other nonsense before switching channels to friends and American tv shows (which I’m guessing you’d rather she watched?) which ironically probably had far more negative messages about body image and relationships in them than the cartoons. If it’s the only thing she’s reading/watching then yes maybe be concerned.

EggyPegg · 15/09/2020 23:56

This thread lead me to looking for some late nigt comfort Gummi Bears without getting off the sofa. And I have discovered all six seasons are on Disney+. I thank you for the thread!

I was so happy to find Gummi Bears too!

OP, this is a non issue. I’m 31, I just rewatched the entirety of Hannah Montana and loved it. I’m not a goth (not anymore, anyway, but there is nothing wrong with goths Hmm) or a nazi. Plenty of adults (me included) are really into Disney which is technically for kids, I don’t think this is any different really.

TheSmallAssassin · 16/09/2020 00:04

I love the way my daughter and her friends get nostalgic for their childhoods at the grand old age of 15, it's amusing, not disturbing!

IheartHarryStyles · 16/09/2020 00:05

DD 17 was the happiest I’ve seen her in ages when she saw there was a new Phineas & Ferb movie on Disney + the other week.

Not a swastika to be seen Hmm

mollysmysteries · 16/09/2020 00:06

I just want to assure you it's completely normal- I'm 29, and with the addition of Disney-life all my friends have been going back and watching the classics, even old stuff like Hannah Montana! Cinderella! and Pokemon etc.

Quite a lot of young people like to watch easy stuff as it doesn't involve much effort (can play on phone same time) and there are a lot of youtubers who watch old kids tv and chat about it for a laugh.

iswhois · 16/09/2020 00:11

I used to watch kids cartoons all the way through secondary school (and still do sometimes)

There's something really comforting about it. It's really no big deal.

iswhois · 16/09/2020 00:13

@GreekYogurtWalnuts omg!!!! The best!!! I'm going to try and find somewhere to watch it tomorrow! BearBear

Legoandloldolls · 16/09/2020 00:15

Ah bless her. She just probably finds it comforting right now. It's pretty hard being a teen right now.

I find it better to talk around subjects if my teen seems a bit off, not quite himself. Sometimes they sress over the weirdest things. They dont always know what that stresses are about.

Unless she starts dressing up in MLP shirts and Pjs outside the house I wouldnt worry about her not wanting to grow up.

Anyway, I hate being a adult. It sucks so I wouldn't blame her

imfatletsparty · 16/09/2020 00:21

Who knew MLP and goth culture was the (goose) stepping stone joining the the fucking SS 😂😂 absolute lunacy 🌛

blacksax · 16/09/2020 00:36

My dd and her bf, both in their early 20's, are currently planning a Disney cartoon binge-watching day.

I'll probably watch too Grin

user1468538201 · 16/09/2020 00:59

Should I be freaking out, I found my husband watching Little House on the Prairie recently, he told me he enjoys it because the good guy always wins and theres always a moral in the story unlike modern tv, a little safe escapism, maybe MLP is the same for your daughter.

DameHannahRelf · 16/09/2020 01:07

I'm nearly 30 and still occassionaly watch Ruby Gloom, Pokemon Indigo League and Scooby Doo or old kids movies like The Little Princess etc. Usually when I'm hungover, but not always, sometimes a bit of light childish entertainment is just the thing when you're feeling stressed or down. Or even just because you take a notion. For me it's a comfort thing.

DameHannahRelf · 16/09/2020 01:07

*comfort and of course, nostaglia.

LUZON · 16/09/2020 09:40

I have t watched MLP but does it have amusing subplots for adults or is it just funny like spongebob? Or is it just a little kids show.

I think there was a thing where uni students watched Teletubbies but. It sure if drugs were involved?

Juanmorebeer · 16/09/2020 09:49

OK someone needs to explain the MLP and Nazi connection to me please.

I'm baffled
