Teen missed periods

Daughter is 14 and started her periods around 15 months ago. However, she has missed her last 3 periods. We have an appointment with a doctor. But I'm curious if any of you had similar with your teen? And what was the cause? The obvious is not the case here. No pregnancy! No physical issues or problems (a bit of weight gain but not a lot). Any insight?

I was going to suggest weight loss as my periods stopped for a year when I was 16 due to loosing a lot of weight very quickly. The doctor did think that it was PCOS but when my periods came back and were regular that was dismissed so it could possibly be that? I'm sure it's nothing though but always best to check

I know you said it isn’t pregnancy, but the first thing a doctor will do is a test. Has your daughter done a home test?

Crylittlesister · 13/09/2020 22:28

Mine is 14, she started a year ago and has had 3 periods since. She is a normal weight (definitely not on the smaller side of normal) and is tall, so no outward signs of why. I am putting it down to hormones and getting regulated at the moment, if nothing in the next 6 months I will speak to the GP.

CuppaZa · 13/09/2020 22:28

DD went 6 months with no period, but she had no long started them, so assumed that was why. Took her to GP, first question was obviously ‘could you be pregnant’.
Periods returned after 6 mo this but are very irregular, even 8 years later. Pre-Covid she was due to be investigated for possible PCOS.

I was like that. Started at 13 and was very irregular. I would go for months without a period, then they would settle down a bit, between 30 and 35 days, then nothing for three months.

It just takes longer for some girls to become fairly regular, there was nothing wrong with me and I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your daughter unless you have other concerns.

LittleMissMe99 · 14/09/2020 21:21

Thanks all. No chance of pregnancy at ALL. She had one every month without fail prior to them stopping. Maybe it's hormones? Hopefully docs can clear it up. She's quite happy they've gone 😂

No chance. No interest in boys. Hasn't really left the house during lockdown. She thinks boys are disgusting ha! She knows docs will ask though.

Hi Just thought i'd add, I myself had very irregular periods for most of my life actually. I started my periods just before I was 16. Now 48. I'd have times where periods were fairly regular - then nothing for a few months at a time. There was never any explanation for it and I was told that's just the way I was. I got used to it - but it did make predicting my "on" times virtually impossible so you kind of have to be prepared to be "on" at any time.
After my 2nd child things became regular for the first time - now at 48 they're getting irregular again as I approach the big M.

I'm sure your daughter will be fine :)

Hi, I know it has been a few months since you posted this, but I was wondering what the outcome was? What did the doc say?
My 13 year old started her period about a year and a half ago. They were only about every three months initially, then were monthly for about 4 months, and now she hasn't had a period for about 3 months. I am worried about Pcos...

Hi, the doctor said she was probably just regulating and that can be normal. But she would refer her if they didn't start again. A few days after the docs visit, she got her period. This was September. She's not had one in October. If she doesn't get one this month, I'll take her back I think. But I suspect it's just irregular. No harm in getting your daughter checked out. My daughter has no other symptoms to suggest pcos, so I don't know

Please push for your daughters if they aren’t having their periods and something isn’t quite right. I wish my mum did.

It took till 3 months ago when me and my DH had tried to conceive for a year that I found out I have PCOS. When I was younger and only had periods every 6 months my mum took me to docs who just put me on contraception instead of actually looking into it, contraception stopped my periods completely and you just don’t think when you’re young and trying to avoid pregnancy. I wish she would have pushed to find out then, I would have known sooner - as you can imagine it caused proper devastation when I found out. 😕
