What are your experiences? How much do you give per month and what does your DD/DS pay for? My DD wants to move from pocket money to allowance, but I don’t have a clue where to start!
Thank you!

How much you give will depend on what you intend to pay for her. So for example if you will still pay for her clothes and mobile (and extra classes / driving license) then even something as small as £20 would be fair.

I give 16 year old DS £15 a week, which is probably a bit above average but most of his friends live a train journey away so I factored that cost in. He's usually pretty good at saving for school holidays to give himself more.

I also pay for basic clothing and his phone bill

Mine got £50 a month, they bought little bits of clothes and make up plus entertainment etc but I took them shopping twice a year for clothes and paid their mobile bills. We didn't want them to work

Currently mine get £75 a month from which they pay for phones as well as make up, non essential clothes, going out. Off to sixth form college in sept so will put it up to cover more clothing, bus fare, lunches.

My 15 year old gets £50 a month. Phone, and necessary clothes and toiletries are paid for.

ie. he recently needed new shoes inc running trainers (he runs about 25-30k a week) which I bought. I also bought him new shorts, tracksuit bottoms and jeans recently because he’d grown out of his old ones. If he wants anything else though then he buys it himself because it’s not strictly necessary.

He pays for birthday and Christmas gifts for family (Parents and siblings), and saves up to have money for holidays or for larger items he wants to buy. If he’s going out with friends then it’s on him.

My niece (same age) however gets £120 a month! She gets her phone paid for but nothing else.

At the minute DS is loaded because his allowance has continued since lockdown but he’s barely been out! When DD gets to the same age she will get the same amount but I can guarantee she will always have less in her account because she is much more likely to buy extra clothes/jewellery etc

Dd has her phone paid for and no travelling costs to school.

She gets £80pm which pays for clothes, toiletries and going out. She also has a part-time job which she mainly saves but buys stuff with too.

My DD16 gets her phone paid for, most of her clothes, a haircut a couple of times a year, she doesn’t socialise a lot so tend to give her some money when she does. We give her £20 a month. She’s trying to get a job but no joy so far.

We pay £85/month and we cover lunches and phones, insurance for the car. Dd has a Saturday job and ds has just managed to get a job too...we continue to pay them regardless of whether they work.

Some generous parents here...l got nothing and was told to get a job if I wanted any ‘extras’.
