Period pains- what's normal?

DD (12) started her periods a few months ago. She has been having 2-3 days every month of severe pain (bad enough to go to bed, probably wouldn't have been able to go to school, had there been school).

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and when is the right point to go to the GP? Obviously she has only had periods for a few months so things may settle down but I don't want to leave her suffering when she might be able to do something to help matters.

Am I right in thinking that the only option other than painkillers etc is to go on the pill? Has anyone any experience of this with a tween/teen (not sexually active)?

Immedeately - my DFriend at school passed out from the pain and was told to get on with it as it is "normal for girls /woman".

Which I found odd for a natural bodily function.
And yes, the pill can help to regulate periods and greatly reduce pain.

My DD was like that and I fear I may have waited to long to take her. If your DD doesn’t respond to ibuprofen or co-codamol, then I’d probably call and ask for an appointment. They may be able to give her stronger painkillers or prescribe something like tranexamic acid or even the pill if that’s what you both want.

See your GP. There's no need for her to be left suffering in pain.
