My "baby boy" has a job! [gulp]

Actually less of the gulping.. he needs one.. I can't cope with his desperate need for more phone credit of late - and neither can he - has cleaned out his savings account in last few weeks, so I was the one who suggested he gets himself a weekend job.

He is 15. We phoned round a few places and left our number and tonight a local hotel/restaurant phoned back and said they would like to take him on, on a casual basis and could he do this weekend as a trial.

He is working 2pm - 10pm Sat and Sun (which I know is a long shift for a 15 year old who has never had a job before, so have warned him!) and getting paid a fiver an hour (which I think is good?) for working in the hotel kitchen, loading/unloading dish washer etc. He get drinks/snacks thrown in on his breaks.

If he can hack it and they think he's a good worker he will be get offered weekend shifts on a regular basis although not every week end because (the head chef said) he knows that teenagers have school work/hobbies to fit in as well!

I think this sounds pretty good.

Do you?

DS is v.pleased

Thank you

[whispers v quietly] Are we speaking now Custy? (hope so..)

DS can't quite believe he will walk away with £80 when they pay him on Sunday night! I said you have to do the work first.. and properly!

I should know this.. but.. do kids of this age not have to pay any tax of any kind then? And is cash in hand allowed still? (stupid questions but realised I don't actually know the answer to them! )

Congratulations to ds1.

I'm no expert on tax but IIRC you only pay it if you earn above a certain amount in a year - £3k or £4k or something like that. Someone on here will know the exact amount.

He'll have a tax free allowance to fill, which will take him a long time, so he'll get it all Sounds good... warn him that he may have to wait for a paycheck though!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 25/09/2007 09:40

I think he's getting paid cash in hand when he finishes on the Sunday each weekend he works. Well he didn't actually say cash in hand.. but I assumed..

Probably will be cash in hand. Not a problem for him but could be for his employers if they do this across the board. I suggest he keeps a record of his wages - that's a good lesson to learn anyway.
