Car insurance for 17 year old

Hi all...my DS16 is desperate for a car when he turns 17 in November so have told him to look in to all the costs and come up with a plan and I will help him. Can a 16 year old get an insurance quote in advance? This is obviously going to be a huge expense so if anyone has any advice/experience of how to go about this, I'd love to hear it. Ideally I want him to be able to drive on his actual birthday.TIA

You don’t have to put your driving license number in for a quote, just leave it blank and you can bypass it. Also when applying for license if you have an up to date passport with recent photo you can put passport number in and it will use same photo.

Just done my DD’ s she still on the provisional license , as a named driver on a 1.5l engine is £1300 a year , £200 deposit and £102 a month after through Marmalade

ThePianist38 · 29/05/2020 14:32

Buy the car in your name and insure it only for yourself , and then get additional insurance for him through a different company, Marmalade is a box insurance but they earn their NCD and if they have an accident it won’t affect your insurance, so two insurances for 1 car, hope that makes sense .

And the price stays the same after they pass their tests .

Thanks @ThePianist38 that sounds really interesting. Will check them out online.

Hairydogmummy- look at named driver insurance , not learner . Good luck 👍

So glad I've found this thread.
Dh asked the other day and I said 'oh there's always a good thread about this every year on mn, I'll try and find the latest'.

Dd2 is on marmalade. We took out an annual policy just before she passed her test so she had her own insurance. She has a black box but no restrictions. It was about £600 for the year.

Have you looked at your teen having a bolt on learner driver policy?
We tried to add my son to my insurance (on 2010 fiat 500) and my insurance company said No! We then used a bolt on from Veygo. It is a separate policy that is in the teens name and can be used for your car. It is available in short periods 1week to 3 months duration. It cost us £38 last summer for 3 months cover, and we ensured he had had several lessons with an instructor first- with the instructor advising when he thought he'd be capable and confident enough. Worked really well for our needs. He bought a Micra (04 plate) and insured in his own name by More than with a black box that allows any hour £1300, with so far £200 repaid onto a payment card for excellent driving. Policy has reduced by £400 this year.

I used this for when my son was learning to drive. You can pay by the hour. It was the only way I could insure him on my car.
I wouldn't buy a car until he has passed his test.

When he passed his test at 17, he bought an 11 yr old Clio. This cost £1600 to insure , he also has to have a black box.

I’m using veygo for Dd at the minute while she’s learning.

I wouldn’t get him a car until he passes his test, there’s going to be a massive backlog for lessons and tests. Round here it’s a 3 month wait for an instructor to be free for lessons and the same for tests. That’s in normal times. I can see it doubling when everything reopens.
