Contraception for 14 yr old DD - severe period pains

I hope someone can help/suggest something.

My DD is 14 and really struggling with her periods. They have been getting progressively worse and now the pain is making her physically sick on the first day.

Had a telephone appointment with the doctor today and they suggested some sort of contraception. They gave my DD a weblink to read to see what type would fit her best. I didn’t realise there was so many options!

I use the pill to control painful periods since I was 15 too so I guess it’s all genetic (poor kid!)

I just wondered if any of your DDs have found help and what type is best to use?
Tia

Did they suggest mini pill or combined? Or something else?

My daughter went on the pill at that age. She suffered from really heavy painful periods and it was awful. Once she started taking the pill things got a lot better for her. Instead of periods lasting up to 10 days, they last 6 and are a lot lighter. She still gets a bit of pain on the first 2 days but nothing compared to before.
The doctor said they wouldn't do any investigating until she turns 18 but she does seem to have all the symptoms of endometriosis.

She's on dretine. She went through 2 others first but they gave her terrible skin. This one seems to be working.

When I was a teenager I was put on the pill for my period pains and had very severe mood swings (angry rages, depression, self harmed etc) and had to stop taking it. I'd tried a few different ones before I stopped. Just something to watch out for if she does start as I would hate anyone else to go through that. At some point I was also given mefenamic acid for pain relief and tranexamic acid to reduce the flow which seemed to help.

Looks like Dretine is a combined pill (generic form if Yasmin)

Not directly answering your question, but when I took up exercising my PMS disappeared.
The pill gave me permanent PMS. Tried different types and some were worse than others.

When I was 15 I was put on the pill because of severe period pains but also prescribed magnesium. I can’t remember if it actually helped but might be worth looking in to :)

I had horrendous period pain from 10 years old onwards. Combined pill turned me insane but the best one for me was the mini pill - you take it continuously and I didn't have a period at all which was like a breathe of fresh air! She'd just need to remember to take it the same time every day otherwise it will mess with her cycle.

Have they made any indications to look into why her period pain is so bad? Just worth asking for some small checks to make sure there's nothing underlying that may be useful to know in later life.

Good luck! I remember those days very well and she has all my sympathy Thanks

I wish my mum had put me on the pill at 14 my periods were HORRENDOUS! I'd take 5 days off school, college, uni & work throughout the years. I had excruciating pain, would throw up, pass out and be bed bound for those days. After 19 years yes 19 years of suffering I finally gave in and went on the pill (Yasmin) a few years ago and wish I'd done it sooner.

Now my 15 year old has suffered almost as badly as me the last 3 years. End of last year our GP discussed her options of the pill or prescribed pain relief with her and she choose the pain relief (I would have put her on the pill if she choose it. My mum refused when i was 14 and I suffered greatly for it). Anyway the medicines are Mefenamic Acid and Tranexamic acid.

So maybe discuss with your daughter what she'd like to do regarding the type of medication and then talk to your GP together.

I wwas like your dd but it took until I was 17 for may mum to let me take the pill, it made a huge difference.

Then, much later, I swapped to the injection and that was wonderfull, I got nothing, no pain, no moodyness, no vomiting.

I hadn't tried it earlier because they say it can make things worse for some people, what I didn't realise at the time was that I already had all the 'worst' symptoms.

I'd recomend it, the only thing is you need to visit a Dr or nurse every three months which might not be practical for a teenager.

Both mine went on the pill age 14/15 to control heavy periods.
The best side effect is that you can vary when you have the break (as you can join packets or part packets together) so they can ensure they don't have period over a holiday or during exams.

ReluctantHillCrester · 02/05/2020 11:10

I was put on the combined pill at 16 for incredibly painful periods.

Turned out I had endometriosis but took 11 years to diagnose. The pill helped me for 10 years. It was a life changer.

MarieQueenofScots · 02/05/2020 11:12

Mine went on at 12 to sort hers (she’d had periods for 15 months by this point) and it has changed her life which sounds like ridiculous hyperbole but it’s how it feels to her Smile

She is on the combined pill.

ACatWhoBinds · 09/07/2020 16:38

I went on the pill at 15 because of heavy periods but I’d look at the implant honestly. She won’t have to worry about remembering to take it and it lasts for 3 years. It makes periods lighter and can stop them all together in some people. It made SUCH a difference for me!

sadie9 · 10/07/2020 08:24

My DD15 went on pill a good few months back. No problems so far. She was having periods lasting 15 days. She hasn't managed tampons yet so school was getting really tricky for having to change pads often or just worrying continuously. Changed her life. She was 14 when she started on it.
