At what age is it reasonable to expect DD to start ironing her own clothes?

I do all the washing and folding-she will help if nagged, but I think DD14 and DD12 need to start doing their own ironing and putting away.Of course if I aks them to do anything you'd think I was asking them to donate a kidney-so what age is reasonable please?

think I was around 9 or 10 when I started 'ironing' remember by 11 one of my jobs was to iron my school uniform and both my sisters who were 5 and 6 at the time.

DD1 (12) gets paid 20p per item but does her sister's stuff as well as her own. She usually gets bored after about 12 items!

my dd is 15 and has been ironing her own stuff for about 3-4 yrs.
OUr iron is constantly up in the spare room so she does it when she needs something not in a whole job lot.

I never iron anything whatsoever at all so I have no reason to believe my dd will either. Surely the next generation won't iron. It's a quaint, seventies thing isn't it? Life's too short for the modern person to iron and the parafanalia (ironing board, iron, burgeoning pile of crumpled clothes) takes up too much space in the modern house.

Tip: Fold clothes whilst wet and leave for a couple of hours or overnight, then hang.

I'm thrilled this thread is still going,....and no, DD is still not ironing... I confess I am one of those sad people who actually quite like it....I listen to the Archers Omnibus and iron.
Thanks for all replies, though-I do think the DDs need to learn how, shirts are tricky but it's a life skill isn't it?

Neverenough · 10/11/2007 23:50

I have only DDs-but think DSs need to learn also.....DH once ironed a skirt for me....

get em on to it at about six - hankies!!

my kids aren't quite old enough yet....but soon
i banned my mum from doing my washing when i was ten, totally convinced that she separated my (white) school socks on purpose and put one of each pair in the coloured wash

Neverenough · 11/11/2007 00:19

One of the many tricks I tell my DDs I learnt at Mummy school!

mummcgoo · 11/11/2007 10:34

I thought teenagers actually liked the slept in look, and that's why they don't iron.
