Gap year Returning early

Dogwalks2 · 27/03/2020 22:29

Daughter returning early from gap year. We have left it up to her until the eleventh hour should be flying home tomorrow.
I’m sure there are lots of mums having kids return from a life of sheer abandon to lockdown Britain.
Please help me survive.

If she is capable of travelling the globe independently, surely she is capable of a few weeks of independent self motivation indoors herself?

Sweatheart · 28/03/2020 11:47

I think the OP is worried about flight cancellations etc
No need to be snappy.

I hope she gets home ok OP Flowers

ODFOD. It wasn't intended as snappy, I read it as not sure what to do with her when she got home (which, the same as yours is also a reasonable interpretation) and it was intended to encourage her not to worry her dd will cope with being couped up.

Patch23042 · 28/03/2020 14:49

Where’s she flying from?

I've got a returner too, it's not too bad so far and I'm less anxious myself knowing he's safe and not stuck somewhere. Lots of online friends chat and plans to return but I'm just nodding at the moment not really sure reality kicked in yet.

Hi, she is returning from Costa Rica, hopefully on her flight now. My initial post was more tongue in cheek about her leaving her first taste of freedom to then coming home to uk lockdown.
I’m sure more people on mn must either have returning gap year kids or ones that have chosen to stay abroad.
Would like to chat and compare situations as we are heading into the completely unknown.
Some will be considering uni offers others wil be deciding on the type of work they want to apply for and some maybe thinking of apprenticeships and some may just think it’s all over and want to drop out.
Whatever comes over these next few months I’d like to chat to other parents.
For my own sanity,

@Dogwalks2 Ahhh Costa Rica is one of my favourite places in the world! It’s an absolute playground! I lived there for 3 years when I was early 20’s, I did repping and tours and that. How long was she out there for before she had to come back?

I don’t have any particularly meaningful advice for you, having never been in the position you are, but I did do a lot of travelling when I was young and I actually spent the bulk of my career working in Africa on a conservation project that was very popular with ‘gap yearers’ ....... I’ll tell you this.. 18 year old Ollie180 would have felt pretty hard done by if he’d had to give up travelling when he’d only just started because of a sweeping global pandemic, however, as amazing as travelling is, I think the things that most of the young people I came into contact with started to miss about home were the more mundane, everyday stuff... so you might find that although she’s probably gutted it’s over, that (initially at least), they’ll be a certain novelty for her in simply crashing on the sofa, having a shower as often as you want, and eating food that she craved but couldn’t get!

Thank you everyone, she is home. And happy because it was her own choice.
Where Shali go, same here planning her next adventure once she finishes uni in 3 years!! Smiling and encouraging her.
Ollie180. Thanks for your comments sounds like you had a great time, I’m sure she has the travel bug and will return when this madness is all over.
