Cheapest Small Car

DD will be 17 soon and my car is too big for her to learn on. What are the best options for a small car, cheap to buy and run and insure? I know I can probably find this all out by myself was just being lazy and hoping someone could give me some starters....

My 17 yr old bought a Skoda Fabia. Nice little car, £1000 to insure.

Looking round the car park at the FE college where I work I would say C1 Aygo and Corsa are the most common

Savoretti · 25/02/2020 19:44

Thanks I was thinking C1 possibly or the tiny fiat

DS very happy with his VW Golf.

DD Aygo. About £5000 - newish. £1000 to insure. All good

Davros · 25/02/2020 22:17

DD is looking at Polos

My sister got a Hyundai i10, my dad said it was the best first car he'd ever seen!

As modern as you can afford I'd say over other things, as safety features have massively improved sharply in recent years and this may make a difference if she has a crash.

Savoretti · 25/02/2020 23:25

@BertieBotts that’s a great point thanks.
I’m also looking at small fords as I think they may be cheap to insure too

I agree with a Hyundai i10. You get so much for your money and they're super reliable.

mencken · 26/02/2020 14:05

unless you are buying something from the 80s all cars are suitably safe, with crumple zones, seatbelts and airbags (although they are questionable when it comes to safety)

new ideas such as lane detection etc are things that no half competent driver should need, and are just extra distraction. Buy her a £500 car with a year's MoT and teach her some basic maintenance. Insurance will be skyhigh whatever you do.

most important safety feature is the nut on the wheel.

TeenPlusTwenties · 26/02/2020 18:20

DD learned in a Nissan Micra rustbucket and now has a Hyundai i10 with far better safety features.

Savoretti · 26/02/2020 20:23

Thanks all, it’s the lowest insurance level I am after coupled with a reliable car
Will have a look at the i10 for sure

Another vote for the Hyundai i10. They’re a little bit of a granny car, but reliable and cheap to insure. I love mine.

NeptuneNessa · 27/02/2020 04:57

I'd recommend the Toyota Aygo. Toyotas are well built and have a reputation of being reliable. We have one and it's a great little car. Good value too.

List of Cars in lowest insurance bracket (1), OP.

Panda, Corsa, Spark...

Another vote for the Hyundai. I was dyed in the wool Honda, but will never go back after our Hyundai. Handling, reliability, fuel economy, and features are all superb.

fedup21 · 27/02/2020 16:37

Amongst DC friends, they all seem to have a Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107. They are cheap to tax though nothing is very cheap to insure a 17 year old on!

Some of the girls have Fiat 500s but I don’t know much about them.
