Walk to school

Looking for opinions on what people think is a reasonable walking distance/time for a 15yo to walk to and from school each day.

Free school transport is being withdrawn and just considering alternatives.

Thanks.

1.5 miles. If further, up to about 5 miles, cycling is a good option - certainly if there is a good route (quiet roads, traffic-free paths). Schools do seem to be getting better at providing secure cycle storage.

DD1 (14) walks home from school (3.6km) daily along a mix of main roads and cycle path - it takes her about 45 minutes. She catches the train in the mornings

My dd used to walk 1.7miles - took 40 mins
But for 6th form so she had chosen it herself.
And it did her mental health the world of good Smile

Depends on a lot of variables. What the route is like, how much she has to carry, what the weather is like. But I think up to two miles walking should be encouraged if possible.

How far is it, and is there a regular bus she can catch all or part of the way? Can you give her the money for fares each week and let her decide daily whether she wants to get the bus or save the money?

Does depend on what the route is like (are there pavements, for example).
My dds walked 1.5 miles (if they went directly - bit more when they went via friends to collect them nearly on the way).
No issue with that.
Anything over 2 would be too far, IMO.
