I wish DS would stop growing so fast.

Just need a bit of a rant really. My 14 year old is growing like a weed at present. He grew 3 inches in December and I have just measured him again prior to ordering some new clothes and he has grown another inch in the last fortnight. And gone up 2 shoe sizes in a month.
He plays two expensive sports and I spent thousands on kit last year and it is all grown out of now. I'd told him he had to manage for a bit til this growth spurt is over but everything is getting ridiculously small now and as some of it is safety critical I think I am going to have to give in and buy new. Of course there is nothing appropriate to be found second hand for love nor money at the moment. No doubt Ebay will be swamped the minute I have cashed out for new though - always seems to happen.
Plus I have just had to buy an almost entire new casual wardrobe and I don't think school uniform will last beyond half term. My other two grew at rather more steady civilised rates so this ridiculous growth spurt is a new experience. I hope it slows down soon!

Urgh i feel your pain. For sports kit, could you look into handmedowns from other kids at his club? That's what we did when we were teens

ScarlettDarling · 20/01/2020 20:05

3 inches in one month??!! How is that even possible?

My 15 year old is an absolute beanpole who seems to grow visibly overnight but certainly not at the rate you're describing! It's obviously got to slow down imminently or he'm be 9 feet tall by next year.

MAFIL · 20/01/2020 20:26

I know Scarlett. If I hadn't done the measuring myself, in the same place, with the same tape I wouldn't have believed it. He hadn't grown for ages to be fair, but this is ridiculous!
Unfortunately there isn't anyone with anything suitable to sell us at the moment ReallyLily Everyone has already got rid of their stuff or is either much smaller or bigger. It is feeling like some kind of hideous conspiracy as I am also off work sick at present so funds are a bit tight. I need my operation date to come around soon then hopefully I can get back and earn some more money!

Tell me about it!

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2020 13:44

Yep, been there. Two of mine shot up very fast between 14 & 15. Their middle brother grew at at much more civilised, steady rate. Cost me a fortune, they did.

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 21/01/2020 13:47

I'm like this with DD, but because we don't have a tumble dryer, and I can't fit 4 sets of uniform and 2 PE kits on the radiators anymore. This means I don't get a day off washing.

When I opened this thread I knew it would be about a 14yr old boy

I am spending lots on sports kit, uniform, weekend clothes

14, 6ft2 and size 12 feet and still shooting upwards

Also eats so much!

It’s an expensive age, but it is what it is. Did nobody warn you to save up? GrinWine

Mine was wearing shorts at Christmas, and I said “typical teen! Why do you wear shorts in December? It is freeing!” He said “ehm... all my trousers don’t fit, like, at all Sad” Bad parenting fail

elephantoverthehill · 21/01/2020 17:30

Ds2 is going rugby training tonight, he hasn't been for a while due to injury. His kit looks a little snug tbh Grin

Mumski45 · 21/01/2020 20:00

I feel your pain 😢 however DS2(12) eases it a little as everything gets passed on eventually.

MAFIL · 21/01/2020 21:28

Unfortunately mine is the youngest of 3 and he has already overtaken his sister and is just about to catch up with his elder brother so no passing on opportunities available. (Though at least I am managing with some shared PE kit at present as they have games on different days this year.)
We are all small in our family so DS2 is still smaller than average and I am glad to see him growing really. It is just the rate of change that I would like to be a bit less. If he could have picked a slightly less inconvenient time to do it (my paid sick leave is about to come to an end) it would have been good.
And the food thing - where do they put it?! When my boys get in from school you would swear a plague of locusts had just descended on the kitchen. But they are still probably less than 3% body fat. Oh to be young again.

My son grew 8 inches this year. He's not 14 until next month! I don't think he's anywhere near finished yet either - he's currently about 5'10" but DH, his brothers and my brother are all well over 6 feet. I feel your pain OP.

ArchMemory · 22/01/2020 07:31

“It's obviously got to slow down imminently or he'm be 9 feet tall by next year.”

An actual LOL for that Grin

JustDanceAddict · 24/01/2020 12:03

My DS grew 20 cm in 2 years but that’s only 8 inches so not sure how your ds has grown so fast! It was a pretty big spurt (from 5ft4 to 6ft) aged 13-15. The shoes were most annoying as he went up to size 12 very quickly too. However he is slowing down now at approaching 16 and is 6ft2 so hopefully your ds will as well in time.

megletthesecond · 24/01/2020 12:06

I must measure DS this evening. I think he's started to grow a bit.
He still wears cargo shorts as he's tall with a tiny waist. I'm glad it's a mild winter.
