Would you give him the new phone?

I've got my son an iPhone for Xmas but today he's came home upset as his phone was pulled from his pocket and fell on the ground and won't work at all.

I have an iPhone 7 I've got him for Christmas but that was his main present and if I give him it now to replace his broken one he will only have a computer chair computer monitor and a new controller as a present on Xmas morning.

Should I just let him go with no phone between now and Xmas or should I give him the Xmas present early? He's 15. I'm s single parent so can't discuss this with anyone thanks

No I’d probably get him a cheapo pay as you go and tell him I’ll consider a new phone in the new year and then still give the new phone at Xmas

StayDetermined · 20/11/2019 17:51

I’d give it to him now. Explain it was his main Xmas present and buy him some extra chocolate and little bits to open on the day.

StudentHelp · 20/11/2019 17:51

Any chance you could get him a cheap one (as In texts/calls only in case of an emergency) or lend him an old one?
Could he borrow one from a family member or mate?

Raffles1981 · 20/11/2019 17:52

A big part of me would want to give it to him. Could he go without it until Christmas? If not, could he borrow an old handset from someone until Christmas morning?

TiceCream · 20/11/2019 17:57

I’d give him it. What’s the point of depriving him of it if he needs it? What are you achieving except inconveniencing him?

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 20/11/2019 17:57

I could replace the one he has for £50 for iPhone 5 from eBay but it was an expense I could do without tbh. Not sure what to do.

I would ask him if he would be prepared to sacrifice his “main Xmas present” to get a new phone now. If so then I would give it to him now.

ffswhatnext · 20/11/2019 18:03

When I faced a similar dilemma I got a cheap none smartphone as a replacement. And said they would have to wait until Christmas was over and done with.
It was a nice surprise.
And make sure you get a really decent shock-absorbing case.

Artesia · 20/11/2019 18:08

I’d give it to him - at 15 he’s absolutely old enough to understand that he’s getting an early present, and he will still have plenty to open on the day. I have told my DS13 he won’t be getting a big present on the day as I’ve recently had to spend a fair bit on equipment for his hobby, and he was absolutely fine with that. Plus it would be crazy to waste £50 on a replacement for the sake of a few weeks.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 20/11/2019 18:20

I've gave him it. He said "as long as I still get my monitor" and didn't even mention the computer chair. I'm going to get him a decent cover for this one too.

I hope he was grateful and didn't just say that! He is a lucky lad to have you

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 22/11/2019 20:50

No he’s genuinely delighted with it and knows he’s lucky!

Can't it be repaired?

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 23/11/2019 12:21

No it was an old iPhone 5 i had it for 2 years then passed it onto ds, it barely held a charge. It had been dropped before but had quite a hard wearing case on it this final accident was just one drop too many.
