School refusing a child dinner at lunch

r0ckst4r · 31/10/2019 21:05

My girlfriends sons school works on a card system which is topped up by the parents and is used in schools for kids to purchase food in the canteen.

Today her son come home claiming to feel ill dur to not being allowed to go get dinner at lunch time due to being in isolation and claims all the teachers offered him was a cucumber sandwich and wouldn't let him enter the canteen to purchase food (basically either eat that or go hungry).

Sceptical that it could be a teenager type thing we checked the card system account to fi d he had spent £0 today on break or lunch kind of making his alligation somewhat believable.

Has anyone had any similar situations like this or could give there opinions on how to address this with the school? He claims he wasn't the only child In the isolation room where this occurred and therefore I am going to chat to some of the other parents before taking this up with the school as to why they are starving children who are in isolation by not letting them get any lunch

Thoughts would be appreciated as I'm sure you can understand as we are fuming right now

Firstly, why are you going to chat to the other parents and bring it up with the school? Surely that should be done by his mother.
Secondly, if it's anything like the school I work in they would have been taken over to the dining hall with the teacher to purchase their food then return to isolation.

Hardly starved though was he?

He should behave in school so he doesnt end up in isolation at lunch time

CherryPavlova · 31/10/2019 21:12

There was a reason he was in isolation. I’d be fuming about that rather than his lunch. He’ll not starve. He was even offered food.

ApacheTomcat · 31/10/2019 21:21

He was offered food. Confused

The whole point of isolation is that he's kept away from the other students. It shouldn't be all that surprising that he's not allowed to enter the busiest room in the school at lunchtime.

I would forget about complaining and concentrate on the reason why he was in isolation in the first place.

hoxt · 31/10/2019 21:22

This is entirely normal if you’re in isolation.

mankyfourthtoe · 31/10/2019 21:23

I struggle to believe any school kitchen makes cucumber sandwiches

WeakAsIAm · 31/10/2019 21:25

Yep agree with PP; address why the little 'prince' was in isolation rather than deflecting the issue.
Cucumber sandwich?? Who's he kidding; you obviously, remove the wool from your eyes quickly before this escalates.

I also cant see a school kitchen making cucumber sandwiches. However i think its disgusting that pupils in isolation are not given an opportunity to get some food through out the day, and i cant believe previous posters think this is ok.
Pupils at dds old school were taken to the canteen to get food just before the rest of the school arrived for lunch so they were kept apart but for gods sake you cant deny them food all day. No wonder some kids have no respect for schools when they are treated like that, even if they are in isolation. Some of those kids probably had no breakfast. Thats if its true of course.

But surely the cucumber sandwiches were for Lady Bracknell?

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/10/2019 21:32

I love cucumber sandwiches. Thinly sliced bread and decent butter. Cream cheese if you’re feeling fancy.

Wolfiefan · 31/10/2019 21:33

They’re not starving the kids. Confused
Students in isolation are not allowed the normal breaks and don’t get to wander along at lunchtime to chat with their mates. That’s the point of isolation. Either sort out the behaviour that led to isolation or send him with a packed lunch next time.

Wildorchidz · 31/10/2019 21:33

Love them too.

They're given a bagged lunch if they're in isolation if I remember right, a pretty boring one. I wouldn't believe the cucumber sandwich story.

I would be looking at why he's in isolation though, rather than him being 'starved'. Don't outrage in front of him, they feed off that shit.

Fuckenstein · 31/10/2019 21:36

If he doesn't like cucumber he could have eaten the bread and butter. Concentrate on why he was in isolation.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 31/10/2019 21:37

Did they cut the crusts off?

Chloemol · 31/10/2019 21:41

Instead for worrying about sandwich’s which he was provided with you should be more concerned about why he was in isolation and talking to him about his behaviour that got him there

Daaps · 31/10/2019 21:48

Just asked dd. She says they are taken into the dining room “like a chain gang” and they get a sandwich which is taken back to eat in isolation. She doesn’t know if they pay or not. I don’t get why he was sick with hunger if he had a sandwich.

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/10/2019 21:54

I hate cucumber so would not like that. However I never behaved badly enough to be in isolation.

School I work in offers sandwiches. A pupil in isolation doesn't get to wander about

BoneyBackJefferson · 31/10/2019 21:55

So even if we take this at face value, the complaint is actually that they wouldn't let him buy the food that he wanted.

Not that they wouldn't let him eat or provide him with food.

Bessica1970 · 31/10/2019 22:01

In our school, students order a basic sandwich (chicken or cheese) and a piece of fruit or a yoghurt. This is brought to the isolation room by kitchen staff. I would be surprised if a cucumber sandwich was offered TBH. To echo PPs, you should be more concerned about why he was in isolation, and how to make sure he isn’t put in isolation again!

GooseFeather · 31/10/2019 22:02

I'm more confused about dinner at lunch. Was it dinner, or was it lunch? What time of day was it? Did they offer him lunch when he was expecting dinner, or dinner when he was expecting lunch?

TricklBOO · 31/10/2019 22:05

Did the cucumber sandwiches come in A HANDBAG?
