Realistic clothes budget for 14 yo DS

DS's attitude towards clothes is becoming a real bone of contention.
He places so much value on labels and I'm not even talking Nike/Adidas etc. When I was his age, yes I liked nice clothes, but he thinks nothing of splurging £40 on a tshirt, £85 on a sweatshirt, £40 on shorts. He even spent all of the money earned working for his Dad over the summer (£350!) on one pair of trainers. Nothing left for anything else.

He is still too young for any part time job round here. He gets £45 per month allowance in return for basic chores, but that amount seems to go nowhere.

It just seems so wasteful particularly as he is still growing and most of what he likes is shite quality. However, I know as a teen, he wants to be the same as his friends and how important it is to fit in.

He has had a sudden growth spurt and I am taking him shopping tomorrow but he's been pestering me all day to go the high brand shop he loves.

What are people's thoughts on how much is a realistic amount for jeans, jumpers, t-shirts etc? Am sick of the constant

I don't buy "labels" and none of my children have asked for them. We buy clothes from HandM and supermarkets when they need them. None od them think clothes shopping is fun. Can't see the point in spending £25 on a t-shirt unless it's going to last four years or so!

Both my DD's love a label.
Fortunately for me I live near a market that seems to specialise in fake labelled goods which helps no end around ChristmasGrin
I don't buy them anything designer really-I have enough issues keeping up with their PLT habit 🙄

Dorsetcamping · 30/10/2019 21:42

Out of interest Historysock, where is said market?!

Mum used to spend about £400 on me every summer. We got quite a lot of stuff though (leather boots, trainers, shoes +dresses, shorts, jumpers etc)

Ds is happy with Nike and Adidas so £20 for a T-shirt (max), £50 for a hoodie (max) with skinny jeans from Primark/H and M. Trainers are never more than £80. Can't believe the £350 pair !!!

Bovingdon, Hemel Hempstead.

DD, Y8, has just started getting an allowance. £70 per month for clothes, socialising, any friends' birthday pressies. I buy school uniform (though I will expect her to replace any she loses now) and school shoes. I worked out what I thought I spend on her over a year - time will tell how accurate it was, I suppose!
She's not into labels really, though surfwear brands are a thing around here. DS will be a whole different story in a couple of years I suspect!

Hey I have one too!! What I have noticed was the label loving was really bad when my DS was 13 and 14 and now he is 15 nearly 16 he is not as bothered. He loved Armani, Lacoste Stone Island, Yeezey trainers etc and it was the bane of my life at Christmas as one thing would be so expensive and look so tiny. Now this year he is not so bothered and quite happy shopping at River Island for Jeans and JD sports for jackets hoodies t shirts etc. I think it was when he joined a football team the boys were all into the labels. I give him £20 a week allowance and he uses that for chlothes/shoes/cinema trips/fifa points etc and is quite good with it. If I am getting him more things for bday/christmas I usually get him t shirts £25-£40, hoodies £60 as he is a mans size now, jackets or trainer s £100-£150. And he has been happy recently with anything I have picked whereas before he would have preferred the high end stuff. I use JD a lot and also M&M direct for bargains x

Dorsetcamping · 31/10/2019 17:44

Ooh maybe it's a phase then! Yes, Stone Island def a favourite.
So went shopping today and Bought him a pair of North Face joggers £40 (I had a 20% JD Sports Voucher) and Nike Sweatshirt from Size (£45).

Dd just turned 17 has expensive taste , buys classics so although some of her clothes are way more expensive than what I would spend on myself, her choices are timeless and good quality. AW always expensive, boots , coat, party dresses, I’m estimating 2K so far.
At 14/15, yes Supreme , off-white and Balenciaga were on trend and she bought the odd fake direct from China.
Son happy with H&M , the odd Ralph Lauren shirt and fake yeezeys so less than half the cost of Dd.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/10/2019 18:22

Dd gets an allowance. I said we would buy her winter coats. She told me she hates coats (refuses ever to wear one) and could she spend the coat money on something else. Aren’t teens great?😖

Fishcakey · 31/10/2019 18:22

£350 for trainers????? Argh! I thought £100 was bad! DS14 is into Supply and Demand, Mackenzie, Nike, Adidas etc so not tooooo bad, we get some good deals in JD Sports. If he wants anything expensive he buys it himself out of Xmas and Birthday money.
