Delayed puberty

Hi my DS is 14 years 7 months. He is showing no signs of puberty and his genitals are very small. He's finding his lack of physical maturity really hard and the doctor has told him to go away and come back in 9 months. Does anyone have advice or experience of delayed puberty?

Has he got any sings at all? Increased hight? Underarm hair? What's his muscle mass like? Can he put on muscle? Any medical problems?

My understanding is that puberty starts in boys from 9-14yo so your son is still in the normal range if things kick off before his next birthday.

As a pp said, are there any signs at all? Does he get BO and grow body hair?

lucy was in a very similar situation with ds only a few years ago, he too was quite worried about being so late, but over the summer holidays (aged nearly 15) his voice dropped and he grew a lot, and is now perfectly the same as everyone else at school, now nearly 18!
so don't worry

OP, if there are no signs of puberty at all and your ds is concerned, please ask your GP to refer you to a paediatrician or endocrinologist now as you may have to wait a while for an appointment.

Could possible be Klinefelter Syndrome - my son has it and was delayed puberty and didn't really start till he was almost 15. Have a google hun not to scare you but I'd get back onto the GP

I have two DSs (16 and 13) and both have delayed puberty. Our GP got DS1 referred to an endocrinologist about three years ago who he's seen every six months. The endocrinologist checked height and weight, took bloods, x-rays of his hands and checked genitals.

The conclusion was there was nothing wrong with DS1 - he was just about 3 years behind his peers. DS1 is now growing and his voice has broken so he's well on his way to catching up with friends and he's been signed off from the endocrinologist. Although no action was taken it was reassuring for us to know there were no underlying problems. DS1 didn't seem that bothered about being behind.

DS2 has now been referred to the same endocrinologist - he's even further behind and has been offered testosterone injections to help things along. He's deciding whether he wants to go down this route because, again, he doesn't seem too bothered about being small Smile

Thanks all so much. No he doesn't show any signs yet. I think I'll go back to the doctor soon. I really appreciate all your responses fingers crossed its nothing. I have an unactive thyroid so I'm hoping it's not connected.

my son is 14 and 9 months, he has constitutional growth delay, which delays puberty too. He is under the care of a endocrinologist and x-ray of wrist(common diagnostic aid) when he was 11 showed bone age of a 9 year old. This 2 year behind gap is good apparently, as when all peers have stopped growing he will continue. He started testosterone injections for 6 months back in Feb as there were zero signs of puberty, and has now started to develop some pubic hair and growth of genitals but no real other changes and the big growth spurt hasn't happened yet. This should happen later as puberty continues. He's happier knowing things are in hand and just a bit slow to get going. Ask to be referred as it will ease your worries. Good luck!
