Son's BO

Meduse05 · 03/10/2019 22:11

Hi there,
My 14 yr old son has very strong body odour. It was already commented on by some teachers last year and I talked to him about his hygiene. He took it on board and showers every morning and puts on deodrant but forgets to reapply it at school, after PE, etc. The BO is therefore really strong when I pick him up but he doesn't smell it on himself. Is there a strong deodrant someone can recommend (he uses lynx). I'm not sure what else to do so any advice much appreciated.

Mitchum roll on or spray. Failing that speak to your Gp X

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 22:14

Is it antiperspirant he is using or just deodorant? He needs antiperspirant.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 22:15

Do you use bio powder on his school shirts?

Thelaughinggnome123 · 03/10/2019 22:16

He needs something stronger than lynx.
My DH uses dove mens anti perspirant, it's good.
Get him to wash his pits with soap rather than shower gel. Also he could trim his under arm hair so the spray can get to his skin.

Meduse05 · 03/10/2019 22:17

Thanks Glittersparkle - I'll try Mitchum

I do use bio powder on the shirts - seems to get the smell out ok. He needs to wear a fresh shirt nearly every day.

If the armpits on his clothes smell put white distilled vinegar on them, leave at least 10 minutes then wash.

user1474894224 · 03/10/2019 22:20

Make sure all his clothes are clean - fresh school shirt and jumper, fresh PJ's each night. Make sure he actually washes properly - that sounds ridiculous at 14 but it could be that he isn't cleaning well. Then a decent 48 hour antiperspirant - put it on at night is what mine advises. Make sure Pe kit is fresh too. Then if he is still bad....doctors.

Meduse05 · 03/10/2019 22:20

I'm not sure how well he washes in the shower - we've talked about it but he says he washes fine. Gets very defensive about it. I'm sick of bringing it up with him tbh.

He should wear a clean shirt every day. Lynx does do anti perspirant as well as deodorant. Which one is it?

Cordial11 · 03/10/2019 22:21

Peripex twice a week at night then roll on and spray daily. Peripex blocks the aweat gland its brill!!!! Pick up from boots tesco etc

Cordial11 · 03/10/2019 22:22

Meduse05 · 03/10/2019 22:22

Some great tips here thanks. Never thought of putting antiperspirant at night or using vinegar on armpits of shirts. Will try some of these, then maybe GP if no improvement.

Perspirex looks good too. Thanks Cordial.

Definitely a fresh shirt every single day

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 22:25

Perspirex can sting like hell so be prepared

Earslaps · 03/10/2019 22:29

Perspirex stings like crazy if your armpits get even slightly damp. Triple Dry works nearly as well but doesn't sting.

Get him to shower in the evening, double soap (nor shower gel) his armpits and dry off carefully, then apply triple dry carefully. Might be worth trimming the armpit hair too if he's up for that.

BrokenWing · 03/10/2019 22:31

Ds stinks with lynx, Sure 24hr does the job for him, shower every morning and a clean shirt every day.

Moondancer73 · 03/10/2019 22:36

If he's doing PE and not showering or using deodorant afterwards he will stink, it's irrelevant what brand you buy.
He needs a shower every day, a shower after sports and a clean shirt every day plus white vinegar or the antibacterial additive in the wash. Tell him out straight that he smells of BO and that people are going to start commenting at school, he's not going to want girls and classmates doing that

ThighThighOfthigh · 03/10/2019 22:49

He needs to use a flannel in the shower. Just putting a smooth bar of soap over his pits won't cut it to begin with. A soap like coal tar or imperial leather rather than shower gel.

I had to actually mime the desired washing motions with mine.

It was all a surprise and my ds said "well, it's not like I've been to shower school is it?!"

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/10/2019 22:49

Loreal men expert deodrant 48hr is good for DP. Ditch shower gels for ordinary soap. DP can go to work (manual job) for 12 hours and I rarely smell B.O on him.

I cant use shower gels etc for my armpits either.

Cordial11 · 03/10/2019 22:50

I find it alittle stingy first 5 mins then it’s fine ... Smile worth it haha!

LizB62A · 03/10/2019 23:01

Definitely needs a shower every morning including a good scrub under his arms !
Then a good anti-perspirant deodorant (needs a combined product really to do the job)
Another shower after sports at school
And absolutely a clean shirt every day - no wonder you're having trouble getting rid of the smell !!

I ended up using bio powder (not the tab things) plus a splash of Ace then a 40c wash, and that seems to get rid of the BO smell from my son's shirts

Meduse05 · 04/10/2019 12:24

Thanks everyone. From reading here I can see that I need a way stronger anti-perspirant as well as soap and a flannel. I need to show my son how to wash again too as I'm pretty sure he just stands under the water! Also need to make sure he changes his shirt every day.
They don't have showers in his school which is a pain. All he can do is reapply anti-perspirant.

Curious Earslaps and others who mentioned it why he needs to shower at night and apply deodrant? He has a shower in the morning. Why anti-perspirant at night?
