Uber account for 16 yr old?

Would you let your 16 yr old daughter take an Uber on her own? 5 minute ride home from part time job at 10pm, not massively late. A lot of her friends have accounts. Don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily?

DD had an Uber account on her phone at that age-one connected to us-but I admit I felt uncomfortable with her taking one on her own. She would usually be using it later-for example after a party which does alter things a bit.

Your DD's scenario sounds better but it's a real shame that I a hesitating to say not to worry. here are some considerations-

Is she confident?
Would she not get in if she felt uncomfortable?
Would someone be at home to see that she got home safely?
Are you urban or suburban or rural?
Would she be able to get one without having to wait around on her own?
Does she want to travel this way?
What are the alternatives?

Personally I think an Uber is safer than most other options. She can share her location through the app as soon as she's in the cab & you'll be able to follow her route if you're worried

23Squared · 25/09/2019 21:00

Can you make it a condition she shares the journey with you? I think it can be set to auto?

AgentProvocateur · 25/09/2019 21:01

Yes of course. Remember she’s old enough to get married.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 25/09/2019 21:02

Why not?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 25/09/2019 21:04

She's confident and happy to do it. She'd wait in the pub where she works while it comes, and we live in a nice suburb. I'd usually be at home (I normally pick her up but sometimes it's nice to have a glass of wine on a Friday night!)

She's been begging me to let her for months, just wanted some reassurance really.

Op your update helpful as she is not waiting somewhere on her own after closing time etc.

I'd def review the whole-check the number plate and car match the description of the uber she has been sent before she gets in.

Sounds about as good as it could be

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 25/09/2019 21:28

Yeah will do, thanks. She's used to getting Ubers with me so she knows how it works.

A good habit is to make sure she asks the driver what name he is picking up.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 01/10/2019 15:08

Yep she knows to do that as well. First trip didn't go so well as the driver cancelled for no reason and she had to call me to ask what to do!

Yez, it's fine. My DD and most of her friends had accounts at that age.

AdogcalledBob · 01/10/2019 19:24

Uber are DBS checked aren't they?

I know they tell you the driver, send details of who you are with and your journey to another phone and also have an emergency in app button according to the advert so I guess it is as safe as other methods.

Lisa2019GB · 06/10/2019 21:37

The minimum age to use Uber is actually 18. This is in place to protect children and for other legal reasons.

Whilst Uber drivers are screened and must hold the relevant Private Hire licence, in reality there is never a 0% risk.

You can allow her to use the app underage, as long as she doesn't tell the driver (who would have to terminate the ride) however if it is reassurance you are seeking, all we can say here is that it should be alright, but cannot be definite about it.

lalafafa · 06/10/2019 21:39

You have to be over 18 to travel on your own in an Uber. I had a complaint , my daughter is 16, Uber very firmly stated she shouldn’t have been in s cab on her own.

lalafafa · 06/10/2019 21:42

Drivers are known to share cars. I always call the driver direct when pick up is scheduled, ask him to ensure she gets where she needs to safely.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/10/2019 09:40

I didn't know the minimum age was 18. She's been getting Ubers for a couple of weeks now with no problems. I guess I'll have to tell her not to reveal her age, not that it would come up in conversation with a taxi driver.

Most drivers seem to take kids way younger in their own, but they aren’t meant to and can just cancel...

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/10/2019 09:42

How would they know, though? She could easily pass for 18.

@chocolatesaltyballs22 How would they know, though? She could easily pass for 18.

Either if she tells one her age by accident and it is reported to Uber or a driver doesn't believe that she is over 18 and asks for ID before allowing her to enter their vehicle.
