Most widely accepted ID card for 15 yr old?

22 replies

Elocampane · 15/09/2019 09:19

My 15 year old son is in need of an ID card for bus / cinema - there seem to be quite a few different cards available.
Do any of you have opinions / experience of any of them to help me decide which to go for?

Thanks!

In Scotland we have a Young Scot Card. Is there no equivalent where you are?

BertrandRussell · 15/09/2019 09:25

I made one for mine by shrinking and laminating a photocopy of their passport.

joblotbubble · 15/09/2019 09:42

15 and 9 months will get him a provisional

pikapikachu · 15/09/2019 09:44

My dd took her passport.

Try citizencard www.citizencard.com/ home office approved £15

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/09/2019 23:10

@joblotbubble I think you mean 16yr 9m .

joblotbubble · 15/09/2019 23:15

@MyDcAreMarvel

No, I most certainly mean 15y9mo

Elocampane · 16/09/2019 17:16

I was on the verge of getting him a citizen card, then had a wobble & decided to canvass opinion here.

He's not quite old enough to apply for the provisional yet.

Thanks all

I had a citizen card when I was that age over ten years ago and I see a lot of bars and shops advertising they still accept them. You can even take some domestic flights with them!
Beware of doing the laminated copy of a passport, while logically it is ideal we would be unable to accept that anywhere where I've worked as legally it is not "approved" ID

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/09/2019 17:32

@joblotbubble unless you child receives high rate mobility they cannot get a provisional until 16yr 9m

joblotbubble · 16/09/2019 17:34

@MyDcAreMarvel

You can get a provisional at 15 years and 9 months.

It has nothing to do with disability benefits Confused

@MyDcAreMarvel you can get a provisional from 15yr9months

Aragog · 16/09/2019 18:02

you can apply for your provisional licence up to three months before you start driving.

DD was 17y in April but we couldn't apply for her provisional driving license until much closer to her birthday. We tried as it would have been ideal ID which we needed and wanted to avoid having to take passport out.

CatToddlerUprising · 16/09/2019 18:03

Citizen card

Aragog · 16/09/2019 18:03

But reading online now suggests you can get it earlier - so why wouldn't it allow us at the start of the year.

BertrandRussell · 16/09/2019 18:16

You need a provisional licence to ride a moped.
You can ride a moped at 16.

Where did you quote this from?

Why could you not apply? What stopped you? It's not new, you have been able to do this for ages.

joblotbubble · 16/09/2019 18:21

What stopped you? The form? The post office staff? The website? The DVLA?

I have dealt with many of these for young people. Last one I did was in December when the person turned exactly 15 and 9 months. Done online with a UK passport as ID and it was sent 6 days later.

Are you sure age is the reason you couldn't do it?

Aragog · 16/09/2019 19:36

DH put her details in and it didn't work - came up with an error. And the above quote was from money supermarket IIRR. Can only assume he entered the date in wrong - should have done it myself or just got DD to sort! I did do her's myself in the end, but only a couple of months before she started lessons. And yes, it totally makes sense due to needing it for a moped.
