18yo ds and immunisations

Ds is off to uni in a couple of weeks. He's up-to-date with all the standard for immunisations. Uni advises all students to catch up on a meningitis jab that was introduced after his cohort had completed their imms. Ds is going to do it.

He also wants to find out about getting the HPV jab. NHS website implies that he is ineligible, even though it is available to men up to age 45. We're willing to pay for it if the NHS won't do it, even though it seems grossly unfair.

What is the difference between the various HPV jabs available? Why doesn't the NHS offer the wider protection of Gardasil 9?

Can anybody point us towards some reliable information sources?

I looked into this recently for DS as he's just missed it because NHS was slow to introduce. NHS will not offer a catch up to these boys according to our GP surgery. You can have it done privately at Boots or Superdrug. Boots has leaflets in store & it was Gardasil DS had (don't recall whether 9 or not?).

I've been thinking about this recently for ds(15). For protection from various cancers, but more for protection from genital warts and protecting future partners from HPV.

From what I can see you need to pay for it privately, recommended before sexually active, and if over 15th birthday need 3 x jabs 6-12 months apart (each costing £150-£200).

I'm also interested in any further information sources/opinions.

Mine had it recently at Boots, three injections over 6 months (at 0, 2 and 6 months). There was a discount for paying for all three upfront and you get Advantage points which softens the blow slightly.

Ds has just returned from the GP with an appointment for both imms. Be interesting to see if he actually gets the HPV. Am tempted to have him make an appt at Boots just in case. Can always cancel.

ILove would you please update if he does get HPV at GPs. Our GP said not only was DS not eligible but they didn't stock it as girls done through schools vaccination programme. Assume eligible men have to go to sexual health clinic?
