Exam results day treat in London

After collecting his GCSE results next week I would like to take my 16 year old DS to London for the day as a treat for working so hard, any ideas of what to do would be very welcomed. Have visited museums already and he wouldn't enjoy the theatre, budget is fairly limited though! TIA.

Take the cable car to O2 and climb over the roof? (It's a bit expensive but if it's just the two of you, it's not too bad.)

Visit the Stratford Velodrome and slide down the Anish Kapoor slide and the Olympic Park?

Have you any Tesco Clubcard vouchers? We did the Thames Rockets (speedboat on Thames) last week which was great fun.

What is your son into?

I think a walk along the South Bsnk is always a winner, and free. If you don’t live in London, the views of St Paul’s and the City are spectacular.

You can then add on a visit to the Tate Modern, London Eye and Aquatium depending on your budget and taste. There are also food outlets from vans selling burgers to expensive restaurants with fabulous views.

From there you can easily wander up to Piccadilly and Fortnum and Masons for a look and a great ice cream in their ice cream parlour/cafe.

Thanks Growlingbear, we have already done both of these, which he loved, so any more similar ideas would be great

Don't!!

We've just come back, went for similar reasons.

It's absolutely packed and tbh was a bit of a nightmare.

readallaboutit · 17/08/2019 07:36

Oh no browniebronze, what did you attempt to do? I suppose it's to be expected this time of year that it will be busy

We went to the British museum, shopping in Covent garden and walking along the south bank to the globe and tower bridge. It was heaving. We are going to return out of season!

MuttsNutts · 17/08/2019 07:39

Of course it’s busy - it’s London in August!

It’s also exciting and great fun!

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 07:39

The queue for the Museum was 2 hours. I am not proud to say that we didn't realise where it statrted and accidentally pushed in 😳 inside the museum it was hard to see anything.

SockMachine · 17/08/2019 07:42

Does he know of this plan?
Don’t they go off and celebrate / commiserate with friends?

MuttsNutts · 17/08/2019 07:45

There was no queue to get into the Tate Modern and not unpleasantly busy once inside, we’d pre-booked the Sky Garden and went straight in, got onto a ‘free’ Jack the Ripper walking tour with no problem...

There’s nowhere quite like London. Couldn’t live there again but love to visit occasionally and DS always has a great time, there’s so much choice of what to do.

Have a brilliant time @readallaboutit.

Street art walking tour around Shoreditch?

Ice cream walking tour in Soho?

Go ape?

Outdoor cinema?

Congrats on his results Smile

stucknoue · 17/08/2019 07:58

The river bus (the cheap one) down to Greenwich and the observatory and maritime museum? Nice pubs and restaurants in Greenwich or picnic in the park

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 08:01

Yes we popped into the Tate Modern as well and that was ok.

Don't get me wrong I love London but we much prefer going in the 'off season'!

BlueWonder · 17/08/2019 09:44

I googled adventure in London and there are some useful Time Out and Lonely Planet articles. If I was in London for jyst a day though, I would want to do some thing more unique to London and fairly central. Did spot this in either Kensington Gardens or Regent's Park, it's £30 for a 2 hour session, seem to be plenty for next week. Presumably you could watch with a coffee Grin
