Hi all. Dd is 16 and starting college in September. She has a p/t job at weekends (paid cash) and ExP will be giving her an ‘allowance’ (better late than never!) Total income per calendar month will vary from £225 to £300 per month. (Depending on how many hours she works).

ExP has suggested ‘Go Henry’ but that’s £2.99 a month and looks like it’s for younger people?

She just needs an account where she can have a debit card and doesn’t have to carry wads of cash around with her.... And money can be paid into it by bank transfer on a regular basis. Any ideas? TIA Smile

Any high street bank offers an account with a debit card from age 11. My 2 are with santander

Monzo - but don't know if you have to be 18

Any high street bank. But check out their student bank accounts in case she's planning uni. Most will automatically convert. I was with HSBC from aged 11. Got a debit card as a teen and student bank account was very good.

No need at all to pay for a big standard current account especially at her age and with her income.

Maybe get her to look at some savings accounts too. She's entitled to a junior and adult isa at 16, but some other regular savers/online savers - again with a regular bank that are free can be better. Encourage her to put even a small amount away each month to start good habits early!

Bog not big! Hmm

Nationwide's got a good account for Teens - I can't remember what it's called, but it gives on-line banking, debit card, but no overdraft so they can't get into debt.

I recommend Monzo. Really easy to open.
Debit card, Apple Pay etc.
Great budgeting tools on the app which is ideal for younger people.
My dc both have them

Any bank. It's just a current account she needs. You can get them from at 11. Student accounts often aren't available to college students as a lot of banks state you have to be doing at least a 2 year course.

Brilliant. Thanks for all your suggestions.

She has quite a large sum coming to her when she’s 18 (Child Trust Fund) that she’s going to put in an ISA (I believe the ‘Help to Buy’ ISAs are changing...) as this was intended to help her with a house deposit and first car whenever.

She’s not going to Uni (not very academic!) but will encourage her to start paying into a pension as soon as she starts working.

16 year olds can get Monzo. Just used it for DDs trip to USA and Canada with scouts as it there are no charges and it's easy to load up with money. It's s great neon colour as well!!

My son has Santander 123 account. 1% interest on balance over £100, 2% for over £200 and 3% over £300. He has a debit card and can’t go overdrawn.
Gohenry is just a cash card there’s no bank account with it.

Thanks everyone, I think we’ll go with Santander as that’s the only Bank with an actual branch in the next town.
