Hi everyone. I have a 13 year old daughter who has a very hairy pubic area. If she wears a swimming costume or even just in her underwear it sticks out the side quite a bit and would be very noticeable. I have bought her one of these veet shavers but she's not used it yet,and some sensitive shave gel. How do your teenage daughters deal with these problems, what do they use? Worried about itchy sore shavers rash so want to try and get it right. Appreciate any advice ☺️

Can you not just tell her what YOU do? That's what men do with their sons when they start to shave their faces, surely. Do you not have pubic hair yourself?

Malibucyprus · 03/07/2019 13:24

My 12 year old is the same, in fact I'm trying to find a bikini with short type bottoms for our holiday in a few weeks, haven't managed to yet.

I personally, think she's too young to start any maintenance down there (turned 12 yesterday).

Underwear wise Primark's short style pants are good.

Chilledout11 · 03/07/2019 13:25

I would gently make comments that you are going to use your veet shaver as you are going swimming etc and that's what most females do. Hopefully she will follow suit.

Birdie6 · 03/07/2019 13:29

If you mean you got her the Veet hair trimmer, it shouldn't be used with any gel or shaving foam. I'd just show her how to use it and let her get on with it . Here is a good You Tube from Veet, on how to shave in the right way.

sacope · 03/07/2019 13:34

Hmm. I would probably have missed out the age from the post because that's what stage perverts along. It's not necessary when's asking for hair removal advice.

How do YOU deal with it?

Teddybear45 · 03/07/2019 13:38

I use my DH’s old facial hair trimmer. Works fine.

simplekindoflife · 03/07/2019 13:38

If she's not keen on using hair removal just yet I would get her some swim shorts.

Kaz2200 · 03/07/2019 13:39

Amazon do lots of swim shorts if you can find a top to match or just go for black.

I couldn't read this and not answer. My bodily hair was the bane of my life when I was that age. I wish my DM had know just how much it mattered!

If I had a daughter, I would take her to a salon and have waxing. Some people may think that's wrong for such a young person, but I don't. It's just grooming and feeling good about yourself. It's just like arm pits to me. (I know that some countries women don't get rid of it but I think the general consensus is that it's unattractive, possibly unhygienic? )

I don't know why - sod's law - I always seemed to have blonde friends too!

You sound like a lovely mum and although my mum was/is lovely - she wasn't very savvy with the hair issue. Hope it helps x

Hi there,
We've had a couple of people mentioning their concerns about this post, but from what we can see this is a genuine poster. What we have done, however, is amend the title so that it is less likely to attract the wrong kind of attention. It's the world we live in, unfortunately.

mummymayhem18 · 03/07/2019 16:14

Hi. Sorry I didn't realise I had written something wrong. I just thought as it's a womens site ,it didn't even enter my mind that perverts could still look on these. Thanks for editing. I'm fairly new to Mumsnet in that I don't think I've posted much if at all but do comment on other people's posts. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Obviously I wouldn't let her go swimming showing anything but it definitely needs to be tackled as they grow up so quickly now don't they. In regards to what I do I must admit not much apart from trim it every now and then with the scissors when there's enough for a mini ponytail at the front 😂😂. I did shave years ago but I used to get so sore and itchy after it put me off hence just using the scissors. I had googled and had read it was good to get a shave gel with aloe Vera in to cool it.

Oh dear - I hope it wasn't me! I am a woman honest and hairy! So sorry if I've done anything wrong.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 03/07/2019 16:41

I used to snip mine off with nail scissors. Worked a treat

10psInaLooRoll · 03/07/2019 18:00

I bought mine a Phillips Lumea as they asked for it.

Jammiebammie · 03/07/2019 18:04

Trimming it with scissors can help rather than actually shaving or removing it from the bikini line, as the length of hair can be the issue rather than the location of it, iyswim.
Offer her every option, to trim, shave, cream, or short style swimwear. It’s her choice what to do with it and if she wants to leave it that’s fine too.

TheJoxter · 03/07/2019 18:08

Malibucyprus I’ve just ordered myself a bikini with shorts from Lindex, they start at women’s size 8 though and haven’t checked if they do them in their kids range too

JellySlice · 03/07/2019 18:14

How about not doing anything about it? Is she bothered?

Time40 · 03/07/2019 18:17

Obviously I wouldn't let her go swimming showing anything

Why not? What's wrong with a bit of hair? I swim, and I don't bother doing any hair removal - and you know what? - no one looks. No one cares. They really, really, really don't. It's a non-issue. You can be hairy and swim, and it truly doesn't matter or cause any problems at all.

Dommina · 03/07/2019 18:19

Ask her what SHE wants to do. I go swimming with a full bush. Noone cares. FGS don't implant the 'body hair is disgusting' message if it's not needed.

Oblomov19 · 03/07/2019 18:25

Talk to her. Talk about how she feels. and the different options.

She may not be that bothered. she may not want to do anything about it or she might want to try one of the many different ways from shaving, veet, waxing etc.

I use DH is beard trimmer on mine!

Some people just don't care! 'smack the pony'!? Wink

Malibucyprus · 03/07/2019 18:30

@TheJoxter thank you!! Lindex have LOADS!! I’ve never heard of them before, and they’re so cheap too.

Singleandproud · 03/07/2019 18:31

DD wears a legsuit for comp swimming, it comes down to just above your knees, and whilst it isn’t an issue yet will be useful when she develops pubic hair and prevent any embarrassment from potential leaks during future periods. Maru often have a 50% sale as they can be quite pricey

Lindy2 · 03/07/2019 18:35

Malibu I saw a shorts and crop top bikini in Morrisons the other day.
I have had very good results with a laser hair remover. I wish they had been available when I was a teen. It would have boosted my confidence a lot.

SkintAsASkintThing · 03/07/2019 18:37

Sports direct sell a swimming costume with shorty bottoms (( but a 1 piece iyswim ?? ))

My DD has shaved her pits and legs from a very young age (( 9 or so )) as she hated the way it looked. She chooses not to do her bikini line simply because it itches so wears one of those. She's 20 now and has a few in different colours.

I don't bother doing mine at all but on the rare occasions I go swimming I'll put my costume on and tackle the visible bits with either veet or my OHs razor........as you can tell I'm very well groomed 😂😂😂

mummymayhem18 · 03/07/2019 18:41

@Dommina I haven't told her that body hair is unsightly, which is why the veet shaver has been sat in my drawer even though I bought it a few months ago. But the hair is very noticeable as like I said she has lots of it. She started her periods at age 11 so developed quite young although they do seem to nowadays. She already shaves her legs and underarms which is her choice and she asked me to get a razor to do it which I didn't mind.
