DS and part time job

Hi

So my 18 year old ds had a part time job at a restaurant and has now got himself a new job in Asda as it's better pay and more social hours.

He has yet to tell the restaurant that he's leaving as he's due in on Friday night for a shift. Will it go against him that he's only telling them and leaving with immediate effect? I mean he couldn't have told them before now as his new job has only just been confirmed.

Also, should he ring them or just go to them face to face?

Does he have a friend who is looking for work he could recommend to cover him immediately ?

If he doesn't have a contract, then the has no notice period to serve, but morally, it would be better not to leave them in the lurch - after all it is always good to leave anywhere / anything on good terms.

Presumably the new job wasn't confirmed at 9:30pm on Monday, they could have been notified before now. He could also have told Asda he needed to work his notice in his own job.
It is really bad to let them down like that and while it is unlikely to affect him (other than not using them for a reference, ever), it's a really shitty thing to do. Like, no morals type shitty.

Any adult with work or life experience would be fully aware of this though. So, are you 18?

Just go in face to face and tell them that you have a new job .
It would of been nice to give them more notice but it seems you can’t .

If the job in Asda is part time also then maybe you could always do a shift at the restaurant.

@user20 I don't know what you mean when you say will it 'go against him'?

If he's friends with the manager, yes, it'll piss them off, but if he's not going to be there anymore they'll have to just stick it out.

He should hand in his notice and work both jobs somehow til his official end date IMO, though.

They might not give him a reference. Does Asda require them? It’s shit for the restaurant but if the other job is better and requires immediate start then what can he do? I presume there’s no option to work both jobs as shifts overlap? If not then he should give the restaurant as much notice as possible- go in tomorrow before it gets busy to speak to the manager. Also if he can recommend a reliable mate who is looking for a job that might be good idea.

3 options

  1. Give notice to the restaurant and work both places until end of notice period (usually two weeks)
  1. Tell Asda you can't start until you've finished serving your notice period at the restaurant
  1. Give the restaurant no notice. Be prepared to erase it from your resume because if a future employer calls them for a reference they will tell them you are very unprofessional and inconsiderate

Ok, silly me. Imagine thinking he could have told Asda he had to work his notice like thousands of other people so when changing jobs.

I hope you get it sorted.

A week’s notice per year of service.

He should pop in tonight and hand in any uniform and say his thank yous/goodbyes.

It’s a good time of year as 16/18 years olds are just finishing exams and will want to put their hours back up.
