13 year old telling silly lies

Why?
Is it normal?
What do you do?
Basically I have read text messages to her friends saying she's fell down the stairs, or she's cut her leg etc etc and it's not true.
Do I ignore or what's the best thing to do?
Help!

If they're not actively harming anyone, but designed to make her seem more interesting, I would view it as a passing phase and maybe try to pay her a bit more attention as that may be what's she's craving.

When you're 13, you're trying to find your place in the world and she might have friends at the more worldly end of the scale so there's a sort of competing for attention thing that goes on.

If she's lying to you about big things, then deal with it. If its to her friends, but out and let her find her way and make her own mistakes.

No she's not lying about big things

Our 13 year old DS is telling silly lies too, but not the same sort of lies as your DS. His lies are to cover up things, so for eg, he's had end of year exam results back but has told us he hasn't, if he hasn't done well, or he's told us he's gone to an after school club when he hasn't ( and we know he hasn't).
They're really pointless lies because he knows we'll find out the truth, so I have no idea why he's doing it.

I'm sure lots of young teens lie to make themselves more interesting/ get attention etc, and I can understand that to a point. I guess you just have to ignore it and hope they grow out of it.
