My ds is 13 and just wants to sleep til about 11-12 every day.I let him as I assume he needs it but am worried he is ill or something!I have read somewhere that teenagers need to sleep like this but don't want to encourage him if its not necessary!

what time does he go to bed?

JARM · 25/07/2007 11:40

I used to sleep til lunchtime if i could as a teen, and still would now!

My brother was worse, would stay up late at night, and not surface til lunchtime - just needed to sleep.

About 10.30 but he doesn't go to sleep straight away he reads etc.On school nights he goes to bed at 9.30 and is up at 7 but at weekends and holidays he would sleep all day!

My two DSs also capable of sleeping through most of the day. Teenagers do need more sleep than adults as they are still growing. I would be more concerned about them staying up until very late and then sleeping through the day. It is nice though to know that your mornings are your own!

Teens just love to sleep! I think physically they do need it but I'm also fascinated at how they can go instantly from being almost comatose to bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed just because X is at the door or on the phone. And at least when they're asleep they're not up to anything else.

My 14 year old ds could sleep for england but at least I get on the computer while hes asleep

noddyholder · 25/07/2007 16:09

Thats normal for teenagers.

lilolilmanchester · 25/07/2007 23:32

Yup, completely normal. And while they're asleep, they can't be having teenage strops. Make the most of it!

mumblechum · 27/07/2007 02:45

What's your lad up to Noddy? He seems to be pissing you off a bit at the moment.

Chez Mumble, I'm already stressed out and it's only the first week. Says he's bored, then when I sort out mates to come round/go to cinema/swimming he tells me off for interfering. He's turning into a right unsociable little bugger.

We live miles away from all his mates with no public transport so if I don't sort something out he'd spend the entire 6 weeks staring at various screens and eating his body weight in sugar.

noddyholder · 27/07/2007 07:41

He isn't up to anyhting just being a teenager.Came home yesterday thoguh and was like a little boy again Hormones! We are going to the cinema to see the simpsons so I hope that will cheer him up a bit

That Robert Winston programme did something on teenagers a couple of years ago. Apparently they need lots of sleep to cope with changes going on in their body.

He also tested 11 and 13 year olds to see how they responded to reading peoples faces. The 11 year olds were streets ahead, as by the time they were 13, their brain was having to cope with so much, that that part of their brain shuts down.

It came back at about 21 I think........

Long way to go (sigh)..........Ds never gets up before 11. He used to get up at 5.45 when he was a toddler...there are some advantages to having a teenager

MarsLady · 28/07/2007 09:37

It's how they grow!

themoon66 · 28/07/2007 15:53
