Acne

Asking for advice please. DS is nearly 13. He has developed acne quite quickly on his forehead, nose and chin. I've noticed this week his voice is breaking and the acne is getting worse. Been using freederm wipes and gel and about to start trying acnecide cream I bought from Boots.
Will it get worse and would some antibiotics help?

Take him to the GP. There's lots of things they can try. Panoxil worked for DD. But DS had antibiotics then eventually referral to specialist and roacatine, which worked brilliantly. Even though DD's acne has never been that bad (in my opinion) the GP was quite happy to see her, as it was bothering her a lot

I got my son this from amazon and it's been brilliant - almost cleared entirely

Same as @Firefliess
DS tried over the counter for almost a year but then we went to the GP and really wish we had gone much sooner.
We had to follow protocol and do their topical then antibiotics and finally Roaccutane which was incredible. He now has perfect skin and no chance of reoccurrence due to the sebum glands being reduced. I wouldn’t bother wasting time or money with over the counter treatment, and risking your DS becoming very self conscious, just head to your GP.

timetochangeagainforever does it burn or dry? My Ds is 13 with very oily skin, blackheads and whiteheads but his skin is very soft

Hi. My son started Accutane 5 weeks ago and his acne is getting worse. It’s literally breaking my heart. How long was your child on it before you saw any improvement xx

timetochangeagainforever · 26/09/2019 08:41

The end no it's not dried his skin and no burn. The difference to a couple of months ago is amazing. Good luck. So hard seeing their gorgeous soft clear skin get bad when they go through puberty

crazycrofter · 27/09/2019 17:49

Pinkypoopz my daughter was on it for the best part of a year and it worked very slowly. There were some worse patches early on too and quite a few months where nothing much seemed to be happening. It did work in the end though so persevere!

We are on the third type of antibiotics for DS and they’re working well. I would go to GP as a poster says, you have to start w the creams then low level a/bs etc. The sooner you start the less scarring they’ll be.

Supplement with vitamin B5

There's a NICE guideline for acne treatment, you can google it. Take that with you to the GP. Depending on whether it is mild to moderate or severe, the protocol will vary. But it's generally: mild cleanser (like Cetaphil), retinol at night, benzophyl peroxide in the morning, non-clogging moisturiser. Some swear by zinc supplements and keeping sugar down.

Good on you for taking it seriously, treat it early and the risk of scarring will reduce.

l had cystic acne when l was in my teens (a long time ago, though!). l was on Tetracycline for about two years, but the thing that really shifted it was having high frequency treatments once a week. l don't know if that's a thing now, but if you can find someone who does it, it's definitely worth a try. lt's the only thing that really worked for me. My skin is lovely now (l'm 60) and people don't believe that l had acne when l was young. l swear that the HF is responsible for that. l don't have any scars at all.
