Jobs for a severely dyslexic DS?

Trying to work out what to do with DS (16) as he comes to the end of school this summer (lower sixth). He's severely dyslexic with a poor working memory and will most likely not get his English GCSE this year although (fingers crossed) he will have maths and a couple of others.

Without sounding too despairing, he is a typical teen spending too long on his PC, lacking motivation and ambition. Looking at my friends' teens who similarly play a lot of PC games, they will be heading off to university next year and be looking forward to all this entails - independent living, gap years, etc. and so are slowly getting motivated to this end. My DS won't be going to university due to his poor academic record while his school friends will be working for family companies.

We don't have any contacts with friends or family who might be able to take him on (we work in IT and academia) and I'm at a loss as to what the next step could be for him. Every time I look at apprenticeship/job sites it asks for enthusiasm or timekeeping or attention to detail which is just not him. He is personable with good social skills so retail is one option but I can't think of others.

Has anyone been in a similar situation who could share what their DC ended up doing?

I would ask him what he wants to do. A family member with severe dyslexia has had a super high flying professional career. They are an entrepreneur through and through and put themselves through night college. They kept resitting English until they passed (8 attempts.)

For Ds asking him what he wanted to do was always answered with “I don’t know”

For me it was concentrating ds’s mind on crossing off what he didn’t want to do and looking into what was left.

I did secretly do his horoscope and he has a certain element in all of his career/job type houses which without any influence from me is reflected in his chosen profession.

My DBro is severely dyslexic. He’s now 41. Left special school with no qualifications. Went to local Tech College to study brick laying. Worked as a labourer in holidays etc. Now has level 3 NVQ qialifications - done with help of a note taker in lectures and scribe in exams. He worked for 3 years on building sites and then 15 years at a Tech college as workshop manager/ labourer/ teaching assistant in building dept until that closed. Since then he has worked for a large Building firm as site manager.

Thanks again everyone for your replies.

oliversmumsarmy that is a great idea about going through the lists and crossing everything off.

I'm planning to do that and see if anything aligns with courses offered at our the local college once they open after the holidays. I shall explore the game testing options too.
