teenage girls and school shoes

13 year old DD is a nightmare with shoes.

First year at secondary she had a pair of Superstars - something I was very against as they are trainers. School has now banned trainers (hooray!) and has said proper shoes only. This year she got a pair of Kickers. The rubber around the base fell apart, was glued back and fell apart again. In the bin. She now has a pair of Doc Marten shoes which are undoubtedly more sturdy and better quality, but they're not "cool" enough.

Quite frankly "cool" is a lot further down my priority list than shoes which will last more than a couple of months. She walks 20 minutes to school and the same back every day, in all weathers. She needs proper shoes, not silly little slip on things. Boots aren't allowed.

Any suggestions?

I'm surprised about the Kickers. Dd walks longer than that and hers have lasted over a year so far.

hugoagogo · 18/03/2019 08:30

I was going to suggest docs, they seem acceptable here but I've noticed kickers are coming back.
I assume she wouldn't change her shoes when she gets to school?

SileneOliveira · 18/03/2019 08:32

We thought the Kickers would last longer than they did. they're like these ones (still far too trainer-y for my liking) but she may be prepared to try another style next year.

Oh my God mum, do you KNOW how much stuff I have in my bag already? And you want me to be the one who has to go ALL the way to my locker and change my shoes? That's just WEIRD. Why can't I just have trainers, it's not fair, school have done it just to make my life difficult, you don't understand....

Those wouldn't be allowed in dd's school. Dd has the leather shoe type Kickers.

I really like those kickers trainers!
Someone tie my hands together, I need to stop buying trainers.
dh reckons a pair a month is a bit excessive.BlushHmm

DD (and most of her friends) wear something like this: www.clarks.co.uk/c/Hamble-Oak/p/20346713

DD's have lasted since the start of Year 7 (she's now Year 8) and she also walks/cycles to school, hangs out in the park after school, generally destroys clothing ...

babysharkah · 18/03/2019 12:48

Those kickers are trainers! You need the actual leather shoe ones.

I'm surprised about the dms though, they're cool here, as are proper old school lace up brogues. What are the other kids wearing?

Comefromaway · 18/03/2019 12:50

At dd's school DM's were seen as the height of cool.

Most wore Dm's, brogues or the year 7 & 8's wore Mary Janes. Ballet flat style shoes were not allowed.

Nameusernameuser · 18/03/2019 12:53

We all wore dolly shoes at school, as a punishment we were given daps with laces, which subsequently became the "in" shoes so we all had free school shoes, they then replaced those with Velcro ones Grin black brogues are nice if you can afford leather ones they should last!

Flippant74 · 18/03/2019 21:13

Your girls are very lucky to have a choice! We live in Christchurch, New Zealand and the high schools dictate what shoe the girls have to wear. My Daughter and all her friends hate their brown leather T-Bars!!! Smile, but at least it's the rule there's no chance of arguing with me!! Grin

I had some just like that in the seventies, very comfy and practical.

Mumof1andacat · 18/03/2019 21:21

Do they not have lockers anymore? Could she wear trainers to and from and change at school keeping her school shoes in her locker to change in to?

SileneOliveira · 19/03/2019 07:26

They do have lockers. But it's apparently completely unreasonable to wear one pair to school and change. She was made to do that during the really bad snow - she walked to school in her wellies and changed when she arrived. But it was the biggest nightmare EVER according to her. And of course the mythical "everybody else's mum" just keeps buying new shoes every 5 minutes.

I wish school were stricter on shoes. They have a fairly strict uniform policy in terms of skirts, trousers and blazers but as long as footwear is black they allow trainer style. DD's kickers are therefore acceptable, Vans with a white stripe down the side wouldn't be. I bet there's a lot of mums who would support the NZ style leather t-bars. Remove the choice and the hassle for parents.

Schools are strict here. Dd1 (13) has dms, ds (nearly 15) has basic men's from M&S.

Love the description of what she'd say - that's so accurate

Loopytiles · 19/03/2019 07:44

Trainer style shoes are good for feet, think you’re being U about that.

Blewitt · 21/03/2019 13:25

Treads have some decent quality fair priced shoes. My DD 15 has these:
