What time does your 14 year old go to bed?

Just for comparison. It's a hot topic in our house at the moment (!) and I'd love to know what other teenagers do.

Thanks

Between 10-11pm

BackinTimeforBeer · 12/03/2019 09:31

Whatever time they deem appropriate. Really tried at this stage to get them to take control over stuff like this. And it was usually between 10-11pm during the week - no idea at the weekends and holidays as they are always up when we go to bed.

Seeline · 12/03/2019 09:40

School night usually between 9.30 and 10.
Weekend about 10 unless something special on (sleepover, etc)

She has always needed her sleep, and likes to read for 20-30 mins before turning her light out.

Has to get up at 6.45 on weekdays.

My DS 14 goes to bed around 9, sometimes a bit earlier but always by 9.30. He has a paper round and so wakes up at 6.15am. If he regularly went to bed at 10 or later he would be a nightmare!

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 12/03/2019 10:18

Mine are 12 and 14 and generally disappear to their rooms after supper. Devices go off at 9.30pm weekdays and we do lights out between 10/10.30.
At the weekend I leave them to it!

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 10:22

My 16 and 19 year olds go to bed at 9! I think they putter on their phones for an hour but they are always asleep by 10! Boring lot!

My 12 year old goes to bed earlier but he gets up to swim at 5.30 a few mornings a week.

TeenTimesTwo · 12/03/2019 10:24

If 14yo DD isn't asleep by 9:30pm she is tired the next day, waking at 7:30am.

Lweji · 12/03/2019 10:32

Later than I'd wish, but not earlier than 22:30. He wakes up at 7, usually without problems. He doesn't like to stay awake until late, but is usually an early riser and never needed much sleep.

HalfBloodPrincess · 12/03/2019 10:34

10:30 on a school night, whenever they want at the weekend

Wowzers71 · 12/03/2019 11:23

Interesting stuff, thanks!

My 14 year old DD is going upstairs a round 9.30- 9.45 but not getting to sleep until around 10. It seems similar to a few of you.

I was worried it was too late, but DD was insisting it was early!

On a good day, by 11 but sometimes later! She’s never needed much sleep and I’m trying to let her self-regulate. She doesn’t like it when she’s really tired in class so she does try to have earlier nights sometimes. 12 year old ds goes between 10 and 10.30!

Seeline · 12/03/2019 11:32

There seems to be variation in when they have to get up in the morning too. Some kids are getting an extra hour or two in bed depending on when they get up so can maybe cope with a later bed time.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 12/03/2019 11:41

9-9.30 weekdays later at weekends
She gauges herself though and knows when she is tired so sometimes goes earlier if she needs
DS on the other hand needs to be pushed as he would stay up and read-he has no gauge at all.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 12/03/2019 11:48

10.30, but they're usually still pottering around after that, I start nagging at about 10.50 (ages 14 & 16)

goldengummybear · 12/03/2019 11:50

10 but her friends stay up later (they send texts etc at midnight or later)

LizzieMacQueen · 12/03/2019 11:52

Between 11 and 11.30 here but he does not need to wake until 8 in the morning.

BrokenWing · 12/03/2019 17:59

He's up at 7 so bed by 10-10:30 latest. We try to make sure he gets at least 8 1/2 hrs, 9 if possible.

But every child is different, if they are tired in the morning they need an earlier bedtime. Doesn't matter what time others go to bed at.

Oblomov19 · 12/03/2019 18:06

I don't think comparisons are helpful. Do what your dd needs, maybe keep upping it by 1/2 and hour until she's happy?

Assuming, that is, and the deal is that she gets up for school. With no problems, isn't late, no Bad behaviour due to tiredness?

If she can do that, ie manage it herself, really she can go to bed what time she wants.

Irrelevant what her classmates, or MN massive does!! Wink

Ds1 needs hardly any sleep and regularly goes at 11pm, sometimes not going to sleep till midnight.
Ds2 needs a lot of sleep. I can sleep for England!! Grin
