Any recommendations for suitable expedition food. I have a 6ft3in rugby player who will probs starve if he only has sachets of porridge and Dolmio pots!!

Aldi have fake clif bars btw, I love them.

look for dehydrated advebture food. you add water to the bag (make sure you remove the silica gel sachet!). reseal, wait 7- 8 mins . eat. posh brand is "real turmat", but very nice. adventure foods at Go outdoors. or look at website evqu8. wayfayer are nice, I`ve used them for multi day but heavier to carry. in supermarkets look for idaho mash . really nice, lots of flavours, just add water. add to say a wayfarer meat and veg and boom big dinner!

Fill the bag with food. Doesn't matter what, when I completed bronze I ate 10x more than I thought I would

I bought Army day ration packs from Evaq8 which have thousands of calories and are brilliant. The kids liked the All Day Breakfast menu best.

BoffinMum · 15/03/2019 20:04

I've just checked on that site and they are sadly discontinued but there's a great list of what's in them, and you could recreate the contents, perhaps. Evaq8 sell various suitable things. evaq8.co.uk/24-Hour-Ration-Pack-3-Ready-To-Eat-Meals-Plus-Menu-8.html

These are all really good. DS is doing a 40 mile hike next weekend so no cooking. I will definitely add weetabix drinks and jerky to the list Smile

wonderwooman · 19/03/2019 15:52

The microwaveable pouches of flavoured rice/grains/lentils are also good as you can eat them cold or heated up in a pot of water that's being heated for hot drinks. Pouches of tuna ready mixed with mayo etc. Couscous really easy with some stock for more flavour.

DS took pasta and pesto sauce for both Bronze and Silver and then mixed some sausage and sweet corn through it.
The whole group ate the same thing. Pesto pasta was very popular!

My dd has done silver, warburtons thins with cheese fried in pan for breakfast, pasta with sauce sachets, tons of energy bars and compeed blister packs
She loved everything about it.
She doing NCS this summer, which will be a doddle compared to DofE
Good luck

Isn’t planning part of the challenge? We left ours to it! What does he think he should take?

yodelsay · 30/03/2019 07:39

Totally agree, planning is part of the trip, that's why he asked me to find out what others have as he is worried about lack of food.

He is at a full boarding school so only comes home every 3rd weekend for exeat and school holidays. Things like shopping for food is time limited.

He's off today so fingers crossed he survives!!

I used to use “Pasta n Sauce” sachets (they taste ok just made with water, but I used to try and hoard the little single servings of butter/Marge where I could) and just-add- water type custard from supermarkets. Add a small tin of pineapple., or a tinned sponge pudding already cooked. Flapjack. Cheddar and bagels are fairly robust, and hard cheese and chocolate are waterproof! Trail mix. 20p noodle to bulk out the pasta (I always used to have 2 packs of pasta per meal). Crusty rolls (put theses in a take away tub to protect them) or oatcakes and a tube of primula for sandwiches. Instant mash, ready cooked sausages will be ok for a day.

I have been climbing mountains for 30 years. Never been blown away by Wayfarer type food. Lots of ordinary supermarket food is fine with a little imagination.

tins of mackerel in olive oil - paired with mini naan or pittas

packs of microwavable rice, stir fried with some spices and a packet of mattersons sausage chopped in.

A half empty tub of peanut butter with dried fruit, nuts, broken up biscuit or pretzels and chocolate chips mixed in, keep it in a jacket pocket and eat it with a spoon when you need energy.

Mine used old takeaway boxes labeled for each meal/snack day so they didn't have to pull everything out everytime.

Lloyd grossman does pasta sauce in individual sachets which is handy, DSs took a chorizo to mix in it too

Look what we found meals: www.google.com/search?q=look+what+we+found&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjb97LTlarhAhUvUxUIHTJXCpcQ_AUIDigB&biw=1024&bih=625
Are easy to find and great mixed in with a microwave rice packet or just eaten with pittas or naans - get the mini ones as they are more robust.

You can now get mixed bean things in pouches

My DSs also took some of the fireless ration heaters which worked pretty well for a quick hot breakfast.

Hot chocolate sachets also good

UHT soya milk shakes

Primula cheese spread and Krisprolls
