Well if they are into football or passionate about sports then they probably do.

DS(14) is not sporty. According to NHS guidelines, he should be getting one hour of exercise a day. At school, he'll get 3 hours one week and 1 hour another week. I am trying to get him to jog on the other days or at least do a 15 minute HIT youtube video. But he is reluctant and it's not easy to keep on top of.

Am I asking too much or should I persevere?

While walking is always good I'm pretty sure the one hr a day recommend for children is moderate - vigorous exercise so make sure any walks are brisk to get the benefit of the heart working a bit harder. DS is most definitely a saunter with his friends but a rub when he won't get up and is then worried about being late.

My ds (17) is very sporty, he does the following:
Monday 1 hour boxing
Tuesday 1 hour gym 1 hour boxing
Wednesday 1 hour boxing
Thursday 1 hour gym, 1 hour boxing, 1.5 hours rugby training
Friday 1 hour gym, 1 hour boxing
Saturday 1.5 hour rugby game

I realise this is a lot and when he was younger he did a lot less.

He also walks to college and back and boxing and back so approx 4 miles per day. I think the key is to get them involved in a sport they love and can commit to.

DD14 does 14 hours of training and classes for her sport each wk.... in school holidays she does barely anything!

DD walks 40 mins a day and up and down stairs of a 4 storey school building. Plus 2 PE lessons a week. Oh and an hour of trampolining.

My 14 year old Dd1 does between 10and 12 hours a week of dancing, but I guess it's not the same as say 10 hour running or swimming as some of it involves standing around watching/learning dances or exercises and stretching/repeating steps.. Still it's better than sitting in front of the xbox!!

Can I ask OP, do you exercise regularly? yes mammy0f0ne I go the gym 3 - 5 times a week. I even make a point of saying "ugh, don't really feel like going to the gym today, but my health comes first!" sort of thing. Also, when he was younger I used to make sure he was active - I'd take him swimming, trampolining, to the park etc.

Do you have a park run locally? I have started going with DS about once a month and he is enjoying it and getting better.

Any interest in basketball, roller blading, adult scooter? Those are the only things mine have shown any interest in. It's a battle!

Do you have a Decathlon store nearby? Taking mine there and letting them try some stuff led to a few new ideas.

Hell no, I wish. Cycles five minutes each way to school (though with reasonable energy). That's pretty much it. Not at all fat, but definitely not defined. I'm hoping he'll decide to do something once he decides there's something in it for him, and when he can choose rather than having to do it as part of the school stuff (sixth form, maybe, or after he leaves school).
