Gangster rap

My 13 year old DS listens to and watches gangster rap songs and videos on you tube. He’s started mimicking these ‘artists’ with the way he talks and behaves.

He’s obsessed with becoming a gangster and it’s worrying me. I’ve told him how I feel and have stopped him watching these music videos in the house.

This has made no difference to his behaviour and I suspect he just continues to listen to this music and watch videos over his mates house which of course I have no control over.

My son just thinks I’m a complete dorky parent who totally over reacts to everything.

Would you be worried or is this a typical teenage phase for boys who hopefully swiftly grows out of this?

You say he's mimicking, what sort of things is he doing?

DoctorFoxxy · 09/03/2019 22:08

He calls everyone ‘G’ which I assume stands for gangster

Seems to be obsessed with drug culture. He brags how his ‘mates’ are drug dealers (I really hope this is not true,), buys clothing with a big cannibis leaf on (socks and T shirt)

Swears constantly and has a ‘big I am’ attitude- says things like if x pisses him off he’ll deck him.

Seems to glamorise weapons such as knives or knuckle dusters - he actually asked me to order him knuckle dusters online - absolutely unbelievable!

Is very popular and always seems to have girls want to hang around with him - they must thing he’s ‘cool’ if that’s not a too outdated word and he of course loves the attention

At 13 I'm surprised he had the money to buy his own clothes.

DoctorFoxxy · 09/03/2019 22:24

Both items came from the local in shops - together they cost no more than £10 which is not a great deal of money

So are we talking about 2 items of clothes and him calling people G?

jennybinky · 09/03/2019 22:45

To be honest he sounds like a lot of typical teenagers nowadays.
You get some that are completely opposite from what you've described but a lot of them get into the whole rap scene and it makes them look cool in front of their mates. The part that would concern me is his mates being drug dealers and the ordering knuckle dusters, I would look into that a bit more. Maybe he's saying it to look like the big man but with current events who knows.
As for the other stuff yes it's annoying and to you and makes them look absolutely horrible but it seems like a lot of teenage boys are obsessed with drug culture nowadays.

Anothertempusername · 09/03/2019 22:52

I think it's worrying he is glamourising knives. Are you at all worried about gang type stuff, OP? Or think it's just a phase and he will look back and cringe when older?

Springiscomingsoon · 09/03/2019 22:52

Calling everyone G/Fam/Blood is fine.
The other stuff not fine at all.
Do you live in an inner city?
We have gangs in a local town and it it is scary.
I'd be explaining at every opportunity what real gangsters and drug dealers do and there is nothing 'cool' about it.
Burst that Gangsta fairy tale my G!

titchy · 09/03/2019 22:53

Buy yourself a cannabis leaf t shirt, start saying 'safe G' at him and wear a knuckle duster when your cooking his dinner. Novelty'll wear off....

DoctorFoxxy · 09/03/2019 23:01

Thanks for all replies

I don’t live inner city I live up a mountain in Wales.

I really like titchy’s response - I honestly think if he came home to me cooking his tea in a weed T shirt with some knuckle dusters he’d be speechless 😶

Then after a short pause of total disbelief from him I could say “yo what’s up bro, fancy a fatty?”

OP posts:
DoctorFoxxy · 09/03/2019 23:01

By the way I understand “fatty” is a joint

lol love your response Smile

It's a phase, I remember being into rap, extremely heavy metal etc, I thought I was the shit - dressed in stuff my mum hated and now I'm an NHS PA with a 1 year old who is WAY cooler than I am :)

Parsley1234 · 09/03/2019 23:15

Hmmm I had this rubbish with my son who aspired to gangsta culture after pointing out to him rural glos in a prep school probably had no cripps or bloods to join he was teeth kissing and behaving like an chump.
I took him to the Old Bailey to see a gang trial of unprovoked murder 5 boys 15/15/17/17/18 accused of a 35 year old and found guilty.
My son has not uttered a word of aspiration of gang culture since it really focused his mind , sadly you have to wait until he’s 15 to take him there but it is a very good aversion therapy I found.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 09/03/2019 23:20

I said to my son " you're a middle class white boy from cheshire" and he had the good grace to look embarrassed.

I wouldn't allow the t shirt.
